Honestly? Don't know. But he spent an entire episode running from a reaper in a coma after being shot in the head and then flatlined; and they made reference to the fact that the bullet destroyed a lot of his brain. The last thing in the episode was the reaper giving him a choice as his memory of Sam and Dean faded; either go with the reaper or stay and, be a ghost I guess. Of course we didn't get his answer. And then the show goes on hiatus.
