So, Bollywood fans, is all 70s Bollywood as cheesy and cracky as Tawaif and Seeta Aur Geeta?

Specifically, are there others in which Hema Malini introduces herself to her long lost (abducted) twin sister by swinging through a (closed) window on a rope and announcing "Don't worry, Seeta, God has sent me here to protect you" and then fighting off ( Read more... )

Hema's other awesome bubbly (though not as kickass) famous character was Basanti in the incredibly popular Sholay (1975), where her co-star is the man she ends up marrying in real life. The film and Hema are really good, I love it a lot. (The film is long and kind of meandering in terms of pace but worth it IMO.)

There are some other films where her character is spunky but unfortunately I don't think any of them live up to the amazingness of Seeta Aur Geeta. :( Her standard roles are much more subdued, so much so she's been critisized for being a "one-note" actress. I like her in both kinds of roles personally but that could just me being a massive fangirl.

Still, I'd really recommend you check out Sholay, and maybe Don, where the heroine learns martial arts to avenge the death of her father, or Parvarish, where the two heroines kind of run circles around the heroes in hilarious ways. Parvarish is like the quintessential 70's film with all kinds of crazy happening but who knows, maybe after Seeta aur Geeta you can get into that sort of thing.
