Variations of “he is inspired to do impressive things to get her approving gaze” shows up a few times in Wiggs books.

I kinda like that! A lot of Amanda Quick books have a similar vibe - where the hero doesn't really want to do certain things but ends up doing them anyway because the heroine is convinced he's the greatest do-good-ing-est guy ever.
