Lost Girl is a Canadian TV show about a bisexual succubus named Bo. Which is a setup that could only be completely faily or totally awesome. So far, it’s the latter.
Initially, Bo doesn’t know that she’s a succubus, just that kissing her tends to knock people out and sex with her tends to kill you. She uses her powers for things like rescuing young pickpockets from rapists. She doesn’t learn that she’s a succubus until she meets other fae. Expected to choose between the Light and Dark sides, she decides not to choose either (I rolled my eyes too, but it works) and operates as an independent agent. It’s fairly typical urban fantasy in a lot of ways, right down to Bo having a mysterious past, but pretty good urban fantasy so far.
I get a bit leery about fiction with succubi, but recent takes that I’ve encountered, including this one, seem to take it as a way to have fiction about women with multiple sexual partners without being judgy about them. It’s also trying to be diverse about what kind of fae we have. So far, we’ve also had furies, a male siren, a will o’ the wisp, a dwarf, a werewolf, an assassin with a removable head, and various fae of undefined species. No vampires so far. Oh, there are also magic pants. No, seriously. In an Important Scene (not involving sex) they just kinda...flutter off, and then magically reappear, despite the fact that the character wearing them never had a chance to put them back on.
Right now, the “bisexual” part is getting more lip service than action, though Bo hasn’t exactly interacted with a lot of people of either gender who she wouldn’t kill if she had sex with them. Episode four addresses that a bit, and the series is supposedly going to feature a triangle between Bo, a lesbian human doctor named Lauren who works for the Light fae, and Dyson, an agent for the Light side who Bo frequently works with (they aren't letting us know Bo's eventual side or anything...), but I suspect the series will end up playing out with the het side of the triangle.
So far, I love it, probably more than I should. It probably means it’s destined to either be cancelled or turn faily. (And there have been a few bits where I braced myself for Fail, but the show avoided it by Bo being…well, Bo, and consistently calling people on anything they need to be called on.) I wish we were seeing more of the Dark side, as, after the first episode, it’s almost all been the Light, but it’s only been four episodes. I’m particularly curious about its leader, Morrigan, and if she’s the Morrigan, or if that’s more of a title. Hopefully, they do have a mythic intention with the name, and didn’t just pull it out of a book.
