First Lord's Fury by Jim Butcher

Oh, wow. There was actually a high survival rate. Maybe I’m wrong, and Dresden Files won’t end in a pile of corpses?

Ok, so, does anyone else laugh at this point when a series (or book/movie) ends with the main pairing having a son, especially when they then essentially present the world to him? Because I seriously do these days. It has nothing to do with the couples/canons themselves (The last three series endings that needed to have “The ciiiiirrrcle of life!” going in the background had main pairings I was very fond of!) and everything to do with how it happens so much that a daughter for that scene is a shock.

Oh yeah, Tavi and Kitai have a son. I’m actually surprised it took so long! Actually, I assumed she was doing something to make sure she didn’t get pregnant, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Kid is going to have amazing family reunions.

All in all, and pretty good conclusion to the series. I’m a bit miffed that Max’s stepmother gets to prove her redemption by Tragically Dying, and Fidelias gets to prove his redemption by being a traitor, getting a second chance, and getting to hang around. I still wish Tavi hadn’t become powerful, as I really liked that what made him “special” is that he had no magic in a world where everyone else did, and had to hide that from everyone and work 10 times as hard as everyone else to keep up, but I’m glad that he still mostly got ahead by being clever and devising strategies. I’m also happy tht Butcher didn’t have the Vord completely defeated, but instead just saved part of the world from them, and they’re still out there.

Given that the series apparently exists because Butcher was told he couldn’t base a fantasy series around Rome and the Roman Legions, and DF supposedly exists for similar reasons (I think I was told that he wanted to prove you couldn’t sell a book that followed all the rules of writing, and then it sold instantly) I’m rather curious to see what will strike his contrariness gene next.
