lost in translation

I just watched Lost in Translation, and what started as a very pointless film ended as a very pointed film. To me, anyways.

It wasn't about the plot; it was about the people. About their loneliness, discontentment, apprehension about the future, and sense of simply being lost, of not belonging anywhere. And then, they found each other. And although they were both lost, they finally had someone to be lost with. And perhaps the sense of being lost was lessened ever so slightly because they weren't completely alone anymore. They had found someone else who also felt alone, and scared.

It ends with the man whispering something to the girl (which the audience does not hear), hugging her, and leaving... smiling. She smiled through tears. Although I wondered what was said, I didn't care that I didn't know. Possibly because it didn't matter. What mattered is that for a fleeting moment, they found each other. And although they had to leave each other, for a few moments, they weren't alone. And they could take that sense of belongingness with them, knowing that somewhere, there was someone else who felt the same way.

And that maybe, being lost isn't quite as bad as they thought it was.
