Rectober 2015: Day 6 - Merfolk!

This post was inspider mostly by my conversation with andrea-deer. This time 15 fics from 9 fandoms and 15 pieces of fanart from 5 fandoms. They are all lovely. For some reasons I do have a huge soft spot for fics about merpeople (but I don't like The Little Mermaid). It's not a very popular theme overall, I guess (not in ( Read more... )

Oh, what a nice theme! I don't remember the last time I read a merman story, but there is a lot of Free (the swimming anime) merman art, especially for HaruRin.

I see you're already reading Magnus/Alec. ^^

I'm doing my best to get her into the pairing!

I can't wait for the TV show! The movie was a breath of fresh air, finally guys flirting for real in an action movie and not just in subtext! I've read the first trilogy after that, just because I wanted to know more about these two. <3 And also about Jace's past, because it came out of nowhere in the movie and I needed some context.

I liked the movie, mainly because I knew so many of the actors from other things. I plan to watch it again, soon. I've listened to the first two books. It's easier for me to listen to them since I take a 90 minute walk every morning. I'm listening to The Bane Chronicles now, before I start book 3. Magnus is my favorite character (although I love Alec dearly), and his stories are VERY funny.

You've read Cassandra Clare's version of their first kiss, I hope.

The show can't get here fast enough. I had to make a Tumblr account just to satisfy my need for more Malec. :-)

I was a little curious about The Bane Chronicles, obviously, but I saw somewhere that it was better to have read the other trilogies before and I don't plan on reading them.

Oh yeah, a friend linked me to it right after I saw the movie. And later on, when I read the second book, there was a reference to it and I was all: "Ah ah, that's where the kiss scene goes."

I don't have a Tumblr, I only lurk there, but I lurk a lot. XD

I'm adding you so that we can fangirl about Shadowhunters when it's on. Plus, the other fandoms we have in common.

I spoiled myself on the rest of the books, so I had no problem jumping ahead into The Bane Chronicles. It has two stories about Magnus and Alec. Three, if you count the extra story that was added for the hardcover edition. One of them is the first Malec date. The audio version is narrated by Gareth David-Lloyd. That man has an awesome voice.

The main thing I'm leaning from The Bane Chronicles is that Magnus loves to be fashionable. He also fell hard and fast for dear Alec. ♥

I follow #malec in Tumblr. I don't post anything of my own, just reblog things.

Thanks for adding me! I'll add you right back. I need more friends for fangirling over Shadowhunters.

My impression from the books was that Magnus loves the weird fashion that looks like it's made only for the catwalks and can't actually be worn IRL. XD

I see that you're watching Haikyuu! I kept hearing about Yachi on Tumblr, and now I know why. With sports anime, it's really hard to know if the characters are canonically queer or if it's just really, really heavy subtext, but she was totally fawning over Shimizu. <3

In the story I just read from The Bane Chronicles, he spent a lot of time talking about his clothing. He also has a lot of closet space devoted to his wardrobe. He tends to go for very colorful clothing, and he seems to like hats. He's the opposite of Alec, who wears his sad sweaters that look like his mom picked them out. I suspect that TV show Alec will be better dressed.

I watch a lot of sports anime. I can see we have that in common. I love that in Haikyuu!! we get to see a girl with a crush. It's a very sweet one, too. Yachi is adorable.

Most times, I prefer subtext, but with Malec, I'm grateful that it's really there. Same with the couples in Sense8, and Nagron.

ToriShishi love! <3 I never watch RL sports, but I watch a lot of sports anime too.

Well, the thing is there's hardly ever good, long subtext that leads to actual text, which would be my preference (and which is basically the concept behind a lot of fanfics). Root/Shaw in Person of Interest is about the only exemple that comes to mind. But I really love the couples in Sense8 and in How To Get Away With Murder.

I was a big ToriShishi fan a few years ago. In fact, I have a website for them, though I stopped updating it a long time ago.

I really like Root/Shaw! I was glad when they went there with the show. I didn't expect that they would. I hope if the show ends this year, they'll at least get them back together.

That's great!

I think they will, but I don't know if there will be a lot to watch since there will be a lot of other plotlines to solve. Still, there'll probably be some great lines. These two always have great lines. ^^

I think I stumbled upon some merfolk!fics for Free and I've read some, but they were rather short (and I had no idea which characters are which XD). But I definietly see how this series would work well for fanart.

I even saw a couple of merfolk!fics for Kuroko's Basketball, but they weren't my pairings at all *lol*

I try to get into it slowly :) People talk so much about it - I just hope that since they're promoted a lot, they will get equally much actual screentime in the show.

It feels stranger for Kuroko than for Free, but why not? :-)

They actually don't have that much screentime in the movie / pagetime in the books, but it's not necessarily a bad thing, because the het relationships get a bit too convoluted from time to time, while Magnus/Alec remains amazing.

After I got into AU fics I realized that fic writers can make many things work well when they really want to XD I'm still proud of my Bookshop!AU fic *lol*

On the one hand, I get it, when characters don't have much time in the source material, they might not get much screentime in other productions.
But I'm tired of situations when there is a lot of attention around someone appearing in a show/movie/whatever, only to find out later that in the end the actor/character appears only for a few minutes. It's just... disappointing.
Which is another reason why I read spoilers - to be prepared XD
