This is the Tenth chapter of my Megamind and Wicked cross. It's time to defy gravity and say goodbye to dear old shiz!
Chapter One Chapter Two Chapter Three Chapter Four Chapter Five Chapter Six Chapter Seven Chapter Eight Chapter Nine ***************************************************
It was the end of the year and people were preparing to leave. Megamind was walking along the path with Bernadette, since both of their parents had come from munchkin land their carriages would arrive on the same side.
“I heard him, you know” Bernadette was talking about Glimmer yet again, only this time it was about how he had invited Megamind to come to his summer house
“I know”
“Well, are you going to go?”
“Probably not” Visiting Glimmer was really low on his priorities. If it was there at all, he believed Glimmer had asked him to come simply to be polite, not because he actually wanted him to come.
“Well, he wouldn’t ask you if he didn’t really need you to go there” why did she sound so anxious?
“Why would he need me to go there?”
“I don’t know. If you’re nervous … I could go with you” there it was
Megamind laughed, “You’re always going on about the current mistake he’s making or what he’s doing wrong. You seem to think he’s messing up and making himself unhappy in the process, so why do you want to see him so badly?”
“Look, I know he isn’t perfect, that much is obvious” it had taken a little time to notice, though, “But it doesn’t matter, I like him anyway” more, if possible
He sighed, “All right, fine” he could understand liking someone you could never have, after all, he had spent quite some time imagining what it would be like to spend his summer in the Vinkus, “I’ll take you to his summer house, but under the excuse that you’re helping me with my research … which is a very real part of this bargain”
She smiled, “More help with your research? That’s fine; I don’t mind helping you … and thank you”
**************************************************************************************************************
When they arrived at Glimmer’s summer house, having carried their bags to the door themselves, it took a while for anyone to answer the door. A man answered, “Hello, who may I ask are you?” the man raised a suspicious brow at the two
“I’m Megamind and I share a room with Glimmer at Shiz, he invited me to come here.” He gestured to Bernadette, “This is Bernadette, and she came to help me with my research”
“What kind of research?” the man’s eyes narrowed; clearly suspecting that whatever Megamind was researching couldn’t be anything good
“That’s a private matter” Megamind set his bags down on the porch, tired of holding them, “Are you going to tell Glimmer we’re here?”
“Yes … of course” then the man closed the door, leaving the two outside
“Do you think he’s going to?” Bernadette asked
“I don’t know”
A few minutes later Glimmer opened the door, “Megamind?” he was looking at them with a very uneasy expression, “You … uh, you decided to come?”
Megamind sighed, he knew Glimmer didn’t really want him there, “Yes, I thought your offer was quite generous”
Glimmer looked over at Bernadette, “I heard you’re helping him with research, more of Doctor Dilamond’s, I assume” she nodded, “Well … come in, you don’t need to just stand outside”
**************************************************************************************************************
They were sitting outside, looking out to a view of a beautiful lake during the Gilikinese sunset, “So … Roxanne decided not to come?” Megamind found himself asking, it was strange that the princess wasn’t visiting
“Oh, yeah” He took a drink of the tea that one of his servants had made them, “She’s in Vinkus, I think”
“You’re not sure?” Megamind raised a brow
Glimmer shrugged, “It’s just summer vacation, does it really matter?”
Megamind looked down for a second; if he was with Roxanne … he would want to spend every minute he could with her. It was strange to think that Glimmer found summer vacation not important to see her, and slightly aggravating, it showed how much being with her was just about appearance. He sighed, “Well, I need to go study”
Glimmer nodded, looking out at the water, “Okay” Megamind stood up and left Glimmer and Bernadette alone.
Glimmer looked over at Bernadette, “How is research going?”
She looked over at him, “Good, we’re uncovering a lot of interesting things. It’s crazy what’s going on in the world”
“A lot of things are crazy”
“That’s true” she looked over at him, he was scratching at the back of his neck. “What have you been up to?”
He shrugged, “Working on my sorcery”
“Do you have any hobbies? Because all the times I’ve ever seen you, you’re always so busy with school or how people perceive you”
“How people … what do you mean?”
“You know, Glimmer the good, the appearance of perfect purity and nobility you show to the world”
“You don’t think I’m perfect?” Great, another person who saw through his efforts; Roxanne had seen his imperfection and realized the reason he wanted her was to improve his image.
“No one’s perfect, not even you”
“If you don’t think I’m perfect, then why do you like me?” Or at least he was hoping she still did, it would be disappointing for everyone who realized his imperfections to reject him. Another reason he tried so hard to keep up the appearance, no one would ever accept the truth
“Who says I still like you?” she shifted on her seat, taking another drink of tea
“Well…” he forced a smile on his face, “you’re talking to me”
She tilted her head, looking at him, “I am, but you’re talking to me as well”
His face straightened, “What are you saying?”
“That if talking to you means I like you, then you must like me”
“You think I like you?”
She shrugged, “That’s not really what I said”
He got off his chair and knelt in front of her, “Then what are you saying?”
She looked at his bright blue eyes looking at her and couldn’t help but smile. He found his smile mirroring her; he didn’t know why he felt this way. Of all the people at Shiz, this girl was the only one who really talked to him like he was a person, the only one who really tried to know him. Everyone else saw Glimmer the Good, she saw the man hiding behind the title … the only one who was still here. He leaned in and pressed his lips against hers; her soft, warm lips.
He pulled away after a minute, “This doesn’t mean we can do this in public”
“No” she laughed, “That’d be embarrassing for me”
**************************************************************************************************************
Megamind was looking at his research; it hadn’t been getting any better for these last three months. Perhaps he couldn’t add any more to it, maybe it was as good as it was going to get. He didn’t want to go back to Shiz; he couldn’t imagine having to see Madame Morrible for a whole other year. It had been difficult enough to finish this last one.
He needed to go speak to the wizard and try to convince him with his research. He couldn’t imagine doing anything else; this is what had to happen. He had been at Glimmer’s summer house for a month and was becoming restless; he didn’t want to be there anymore. He had to leave; he had to go the Emerald city … he had to speak to the Wizard.
He packed his bags and headed downstairs and towards the door. “Where are you going?”
He turned to look behind him, it was Glimmer, “I have to go, I have to talk to the Wizard”
“Your research?”
“Doctor Dilamond’s research, yes”
Glimmer stood up and walked over to him, “So you were just going to leave, all by yourself? How were you planning on getting there?”
“I was going to take the carriage I came in; I have to do this alone”
“Bernadette came in that carriage too, how is she going to get home? Or are you going to be back before then?”
“I’m sure you could get her home” Megamind smiled, “Whether I come back or not depends on what happens. If things work out, I’ll be back in time for shool”
“If things don’t work out?”
Megamind looked down for a second, “Then I don’t think I’ll be back, not until Animals have their rights back”
“What if that never happens?”
Megamind took a deep breath, “Then I won’t be coming back”
“Ever?”
He shook his head, “No, I need to do this. Everyone has something they need to do, something they just feel inside of them. Their purpose in life, what they’re here to accomplish … I need to do this”
Glimmer scowled, “What about your brother?”
“Minion can look after him; he takes good care of Norman”
“That’s it, then? You’re just going to leave everything behind?”
“You really don’t have much faith in my research”
“Do you? Do you, really?”
“There is a chance the Wizard already knows what I have to say … or that he just doesn’t care, or both. I still have to try”
“Why can’t it wait? Give it some time, do some more work on it”
“No, I can’t go back to Shiz with the way things are. I can’t just sit back and let life pass by while such horrible things are happening … I have to do something!”
“If you just wait, life will sort itself out, everything will be fine”
“No! Life isn’t like that. Things don’t just sort themselves out, they just get worse! Can you imagine a world where Animals are kept in cages and can’t talk? Whose hands would I be leaving this matter in? Madame Morrible’s? The Wizards? I have to change their minds; I have to change everyone’s mind! I have to make them see the truth! I can’t just leave things the way they are, it isn’t right!” He had gotten so flustered, he pushed his way through the door and left.
“Wait!” Glimmer called after him, “you’re just going to leave? This is the last time I’m ever going to see you?”
He stopped and turned to look at him, “This might be the last time, Glimmer, but now is not the time to worry about selfish things like that. I can’t think about friendship or missing people, I have to think about my purpose. That’s all I really have”
**************************************************************************************************************
It was a long and lonely trip to the Emerald city. Once he got there, it was also difficult to see the Wizard. Eventually though, after much persistence and craftiness, he was allowed. What happened when he did see him was everything he didn’t want.
The Wizard didn’t care about the research, didn’t even try to read it … just tossed it aside. He claimed that the people of Oz were in a separated way, that they needed an enemy to bring them together. An enemy … Animals were meant to be that enemy, whether they deserved it or not.
The Wizard was very impressed by the machinations that Megamind could make, the very reason he had agreed to see him. Yet Megamind did not really care to work in league with someone who wouldn’t even consider changing their minds about such innocent victims. Someone who would paint them to be something they weren’t just so that the people of Oz would consider him wonderful.
Megamind found him repulsive, like scum or some other low form of life … the lowest possible. The Wizard was even worse than he had expected and his plans were coming into shape. Megamind would have to fight for the Animals in a different way, in any way he could.
The Wizard painted Megamind as a criminal, a fugitive that couldn’t be caught. It was true that no palace guard or official of any nation of Oz could trap him, but Megamind had done nothing to deserve the punishment the Wizard wished to inflict on him. He opposed the Wizard, opposed everything he was and everything he stood for.
He worked endlessly, hoping to form plans to bring down the Wizard. Hoping that justice and equality would one day be seen again. Just because the Wizard had taken everything good away, painted the façade of wonderful over his utter betrayal, didn’t mean the world couldn’t be made right again.
One day Animals would be treated properly, one day the world would be made whole. One day the Wizard would pay for his own crimes. One day Megamind would be able to walk the streets again, without people trying to capture him. One day … one day everything would work out.
