DE-gun 2.0: Finally!

Dec 27, 2011 19:57

Hi all! Any of you who happen to follow my Tumblr have seen this already, but I tried a new mold-making technique this week--one that is much easier to use, less toxic, and takes A LOT less time.

Silicone mold putty.

(Why didn't I think of this before? Simple. It was more expensive than the paint-on stuff, so naturally I tried the less-expensive way ( Read more... )

Thank you darling!! :D And yes, the paint-on silicone helped the putty keep the letters pretty. I was so relieved. ^^;

Much love to you too! <33

You are making me want to work on the belt buckle I never finished. XD

Out of curiosity, have you ever used Smooth-on? I've been wanting to try that stuff out.

Hee, thanks! <3

And yes, the first iteration of this mold (which was really not suited to a beginner-level mold-maker like me) was made with Smooth-On paintable silicone. And I used Smooth-On 300 resin to cast the first couple of pieces. It worked really well, except for the silicone which was just too thin to work well with such a heavy piece (each resin-cast DE-gun weighs a pound or so). I really do recommend their beginners' kits, because they have all the materials you need (rubber, setters, resin, mixing cups, etc.).

But if it's a bit too expensive for you, and you just want to cast a small or medium piece with much less mess (and less toxicity), I really do recommend this stuff (Alumilite Amazing Mold Putty). It's mixed, made, and done in 20 minutes, whereas the Smooth-On silicone mold took me nearly 6 hours (and I cut out a lot of steps; they recommend 8 hours, plus an overnight cure). I'm an impatient girl, haha, so the 20-minute one worked well for me. :3

Oh, and the resin I'm using is called Alumilite Amazing Casting Resin--it has the exact same properties as Smooth-On 300, but I'm able to get it at my local Hobby Lobby store instead of online (thus saving me from paying $20 shipping to get it here). ;)

Holy shit Emma! This is awesomesauce with kickass sprinkles! I am ungodly impressed by both the detail that came out and the superior ease at which it seems to be working. This is fucking magic, friend.

Plus I'm heartened by the lack of toxic fumes. I wouldn't want my internet wife to get some kind of weird cancer.... <3
