Hmmm, it seems to be taking me even longer to get around to updating this journal, lately.... there's too many other things to distract me on this computer! And that's even without YouTube, which I've been holding off on really checking out so far -- until last week!! That could prove to be a rather dangerous distraction when I'm already short on time though, as yes, there are in fact even more cool and rare things on there than I was figuring there would be; but, maybe I'll come back to it again another time, and post some of my discoveries here?! I've still got a ridiculous amount of media files piling up here, waiting to be watched and heard -- especially with my increasingly unbridled affection for Hello! Project material taking hold! They just had their 10th anniversary, so of course that means that all the fanatics who are posting downloads and subtitling files of this stuff have been going into overdrive lately....! (I might have to get even more hard drive space soon -- even though I'm up to 1050 gigs already!!!)
Anyway, I dug some of my old vinyl out of limbo and played them down at The Seahorse last week, at one of the new Tuesday night retro events there. It wasn't much of a set really, since I couldn't get there until after midnight, and I was in rotation with three other DJ's, so it was only about 6 or 7 songs! It was so dark around the DJ area though, that I could barely see what I was doing -- and I ended up taking a more conventional route with the music selection than I wanted too, so.... not the greatest set of all time! I suppose that I could have just played what I wanted, and it would have been just fine, but.... I just wasn't 'feeling the vibe' in there. Much of the night is geared towards the semi-cheesy or 'guilty pleasure' ridden retro format; and, while there was no pressure on me to comply with that, I just figured "what's the point?". (It's just a waste of good music, if it can't be played to its best effect anyway....) It was the process of going through the music and getting it ready a couple of days beforehand that was more interesting to me than the event itself, actually! It gave me a bit of extra pause for thought as to what might really be worth doing with this stuff.... if I was actually in a position to fashion the sort of scenario that I WOULD like to see -- I'm not quite sure what crowd in Halifax would be ready for something like that(!), but I'm less inclined all the time to think that the self-described 'goth' crowd around here should be my target audience!!
The discussion concerning exactly what sort of new events people are supposedly looking for has been picking up a bit of steam lately, in fact! As I expected, there is no consensus on it whatsoever (not to mention an extreme minority of informed opinions on the subject, to begin with!) -- which lends even more impetus to the idea of me just going in the complete opposite direction!!
(You can check it out here, if you like!) In any case, if there's any more practical and immediate revelation that's come to me from this recent music excursion, it's that I have to get my collection more in order here, because it is IN A MESS!!! I had to move stacks of miscellaneous CD's and empty CD cases, along with old bills and other crap just to reach my vinyl -- and the rest of my collection is in even worse shape, making it even harder to access!! It's no wonder that I'm starting to feel so increasingly distanced from a lot of it these days.... Um, I guess that I'd better start doing a little more about that, then!
