Death of a Bird
Dan Bickerstaff

Sage was disoriented from what had just happened. He wanted to believe it all never happened. He thought that maybe if he tried, he can just wish himself back before it all happened. There was no hope for him to change things, he could only go forward. Now, all there was to keep his mind off his aching heart was the goal set for him by Cyrus.
With the strength he could muster, Sage picked himself up and walked. "How am I gonna get to these other people of Terra?" he thought to himself. It was true, Sage had no idea where to even begin. What his biggest worry was not that, but more of how can he use his new powers and more importantly if he could make it on his own.
"How great it'd be to fly right now. I wonder..."
With hope in his hands, he held his palms to the ground and wished. Dirt began to glow and became something that it had no right to be. The dirt had become flesh. This new flesh began to form into a large bird. Bright white feathers with black tips engulfed this dirt-bird's flesh. Yellow eyes with blue pupils appeared when the bird's eyes finally opened. After a large stretch and soft screech, the bird took off. It took advantage of it's new life. It tore through the clouds abouve, cutting holes in the clouds and letting rays of light beam down onto Sage.
"It's so beautiful. I was she was here to see this. She woulda loved this bird..." Sage said while wiping a tear from his eye.
After it's test flight, the bird swooped down and landed next to it's creator. It nudged Sage and motioned to him to climb on. Without hesitation he got onto his creation's back. Holding on tight, the two took off. The two flew higher than the clouds. Sage was so high up, he thought he could touch the Heavens. Below, the Blessed Society seemed so small as if it was shrinking to hide.
Together, the two began to head south because that was the way the wind was blowing. Drifting on the current, Sage noticed a town off in the distance. Except this town was massive. Concrete buildings stretched to the clouds. Metal boxes roamed the streets. Sage motioned to the bird to fly to the top of one of the buildings. With a sqawk, the bird obeyed it's creator. The tower it chose was bare except for one thing, a young woman was standing on top of it looking over the town. A perfect landing was made by the bird, but the woman paid no attention.
"Excuse me miss, where am I?" Asked Sage.
No answer. He repeated himself, no answer. He grabbed her on the shoulder, and her head turned around to see what was going on. She removed headphones from her ear. A quite, but fast, beat could be heard from where Sage stood.
"Where am I?"
"You're on top of a building silly," the woman replied.
"But where is this building?"
"In a town."
"Alright, fine be that way. Good bye."
Sage turned around and began to walk towards his bird. Before he got to close, the girl stopped him and spun him around and kissed him. "My name is Miakis, and you can give me a ride home."
"Uh...sure...I guess I can do that." Sage said with bright red cheeks.
Two of them hopped onto the bird's back and they took off. Miakis directed them towards her place. A small apartment in the run-down section of the city. "This is me, thanks," Miakis said before giving Sage a kiss on the cheek.
Sage stared at her as she walked through a doorway on the roof of Miakis apartment building. He was so confused that he didn't see the mob of people gathering around him and his bird.
"What is that thing! That's no ordinary bird!" said an irritated man.
"It's gotta be a demon or something bad! We gotta kill it!" yelled the scared young boy.
"What about the boy? What do we do about him? Do we save him?" asked a worried woman.
"Hell no! He brought that 'thing' here! We kill him too!"
"Yeah!" "Yeah!"
Sage was snapped back to reality by the threat to his life. A bottle flew through the air and smashed on his head. Thump went Sage onto the rooftop. Blood ran down his face. Sage's body began to shake. The bird was attacked, Sage wanted to help but he was afraid. Fear made his body hundred pounds heavier it felt like. The mob used whatever it could on the bird to kill it. Squawks were drowned out by the blood in it's throat. The wounds poured out dirt. Soon the only thing left was just a pile of dirt. With the death of the bird, the mob turned to Sage who was still on the ground quivering. Seeing the image of the bird die made something in him break.
His body stopped shaking at that moment. He got up on his feet. But now, his eyes were pure red. "You fools! You'll pay for that!"
Sage stretched out his hands and flicked his wrists. He made an open fist with both hands. The people in the mob began to glow, and one by one, fell to their knees. A wide grin developed on Sage's face. His power had grown, and now that these people have provoked him they get a taste of his stronger power first hand.
Before long Miakis came rushing out to the roof and saw what was happening. Instead of running away, she slowly walked over to Sage. Once over by him she looked him in the eyes and kissed him. He stopped and fell to the ground. Miakis sat down by him and rested her head on his stomach.
