here's a nice new thing for all of you out there. This is my short story for creative writing. Tell me what you think. It's long
A Perfect Choice
Dan Bickerstaff
Long ago, the planet Terra was formed. A society of nomadic people settled a colony in a dry, desolate area. These people were gifted to say the least. They were blessed with an ability to nurture the land, changing desolate to bountiful, and vice-versa. This was a gift gave to them by the heavens above. The heavens gave them the task of cultivating Terra so the other tribes and colonies of people could flourish. Without hesitation, the people accepted the task set before them. Area after area of Terra was cultivated with their gift. Grass covered what was once deserts. It was up to them to make un-inhabitable areas for the other people of Terra. These areas were set to hold secerts of the Blessed Society. One area, on the very tip of Terra, was made so that only this Blessed Society could live. At one point in the peoples goal, they came upon a problem. Some of the people wanted to use the powers they had to be living somewhere else besides a desolate area. A civil war broke out between the two factions.
A man named Cryus Dellowa emerged during the battle. He possed emense power. More power than any other member of the society. He used his power to help quell the war between the two people. He created a second area in a jungle, for the people who wanted out. The people who moved out, moved with a price. They lost the powers they had, no one knew why. That group of people didn't survive. The original society of people mourned the loss. For the leavers of the Blessed Society were ones to value life. Cyrus was recieved as a hero for stopping the war.
Over the years, the people outside of the society began to forget about the Blessed Society. Technology advanced. Tribes became communities. Communities began cities. Cities became states. States became nations. Nations began launching wars. The Blessed Society, still hidden and never advanced, watched what was happening. Never interfering. During these times a boy was born, a decendent of Cyrus. His name is Sage Dellowa. Years would pass until Sage had to make a choice that would affect his life and the others he loves.
Sage is now the age of nine-teen. He is loved by his fellow people. He is a kind man who wouldn't hurt anyone. Whenever he goes around to see his friends, he can always be seen with his little white stray kitten, Fiona. Also, always seen hanging on his arm is his girlfriend, Millenia. The three of them were inseperable. They would just spend the day together and just play and laugh. There was the occasional days of studying for the Sage and Millenia, but that never lasted long. Their teacher was Millenia's father, the head Elder of the Blessed Society. When they were done studying, the two kids would go down to the stream that supplied water for the people, and just sit there and enjoy each others company.
"Say Sage, why do you think you can't use any of the magic we use? I've never seen you use it. Instead of just creating something, you just plant it," asked Millenia.
Sage sat there for a bit. "To be honest, I don't know why I can't use any magic like anyone else. I should be able to use some because I am related to Cyrus."
At that moment, Fiona came bounding over the near by hill with a mouse in her small mouth. She brought it over to Sage, and placed it in his lap. Sage patted the kitten on his head. He then picked up the still breathing mouse in his cupped-hands. He nudges it with his thumb. Blood covers his finger tip. But the blood, stirs up some feelings in Sage. He feels an uneasiness in himself. His hands began to glow. The mouse began to glow as well. Sage with an amazed look on his face just stared at the mouse, whose wounds were rapidly healing in front of his face. The mouse got back onto it's feet, shook and stretched itself out and leapt out of Sage's hands and ran off.
"What just happened?" Asked Sage.
"I dunno, but I think we should keep go tell my father though."
"You're right, let's go."
The three of them ventured to Millenia's house, which was the biggest house there. Standing outside was an older man with white hair and dressed in very fine clothing. He was talking to a group of older men like himself.
"Daddy!" Shouted Millenia.
The man stopped his conversation, turned to see his daughter and a smile filled his face. He extended his arms and Millenia jumped into them and gave her father a hug. It seemed like forever before they let go of each other.
"Daddy! Guess what! I think Sage is getting powers!"
"What? When did this happen?" Asked Millenia's father with a now stern look on his face.
"Just now, sir" answering Sage with a timid sound to his voice.
The father motioned for the other men to leave and for the two kids to follow him into the house. Father shut the door before the kitten could enter. The little kitten meowed in her little voice. She pawed at the door because she wanted to follow her master. She frantically pawed at the door now. Getting worried that something was happening to her master. She looked around and saw a hole in the wall, but it was very small. She ran over to it, and tried her luck to fit through the hole. She managed to squeeze through and ran straight to Sage. He picked her up and she hissed at Millenia's father.
"Foul beast, how did you get in here. Makes no difference now. Now what is this about you using powers. I thought you couldn't use powers here."
"Well Fiona brought over a mouse she caught and I held it in my hands. I felt something in me that I never felt before, and then the mouse was healed. That's what happened."
"That's it? Nothing else?"
"Yes sir. That's it."
"I see. Good. Millenia wait outside with this little thing," said her father while pointing to Fiona.
"Yes daddy. Come on Fiona, lets let these two talk."
The two left the house. Sage and the father sat down in the near by chairs.
"Now listen to me boy. I can't let you go about having your powers. They are sealed up..."
"Sealed up?" Questioned Sage with a puzzled look.
"Don't interupt me. If you do again, you'll regret it. Yes, your powers are sealed away, to protect us all. Now, you come to me if this happens again. I'd hate to see Millenia depressed over you. You keep being good to her, and I'll be happy to call you my son."
Sage got up. His mind was hurting from this confusion he was feeling. He didn't know what was happening. Talking his Millenia's father erased all thought of help he could get. Now if he went to someone else for help, he'd have to worry about the punishment dealt by father. He stepped outside the house, and he noticed things seemed a bit darker now. He looked to his left and saw Millenia and Fiona playing. He knew one thing for sure, he could forget about the pain in his head while with her. He walked over to the two, and hugged Millenia and kissed her on the cheek. But right now, he felt an uneasiness in him again. He tried to brush it off and just went on home, holding Millenia's hand and told Fiona to follow them. The kitten pounced on the small clouds of dust made by the two in front of her.
When they got to Sage's house, they were greeted by his mother. Sages father had died a few years back due to an illness. Sage's mom told him that there was a woman waiting for him in his room with something important to talk to him about. Sage told Millenia to wait with his mom as he cautiously went into his room.
"Welcome home Sage. I came to talk to you about your powers."
Sage shut the door behind him. "What...what are you talking about?" he stuttered with a nervous chuckle.
"I know, trust me. I've been keeping an eye on you. Listen, I can't stay cause you took to long to get here, but take this book. It tells you all about your powers. Take it easy kid."
"Wait!"
The woman took off. Sage still had no idea what was happening, but at least he had something to help explain something. What that something was, he had no idea. He found more questions than answers. He tossed the book onto his bed and headed back to Millenia. He picked her up and carried her outside.
"Don't be gone to late now dear, dinner is almost ready," yelled out Sage's mom.
To late, the words fell upon no ears because Sage and Millenia were gone. Fiona whined but didn't follow. The two went out to a nice little field that was just made by some of the elders to compensate for the growing populace. Still carrying Millenia in his arms, he sat down in the field. She sat on his lap. They sat there just staring out, as if something precious could be seen. Sage put his hand in his pocket to fish out a small box, and kept it in his fist.
"Millenia, I have a question for you..."
"What is it?" She asked as she put her hand on his shoulder.
"Umm this is kind of difficult to say...but hear goes. I've loved you for a long time now and I was wondering if you would...well...umm"
"Would I what," she said with a dumb tone, but knew what exactly he was going to ask her.
"Would you...marry me?" he asked as he showed her a small ring. "I made it myself."
"Of course I would!"
She kissed him and knocked him backwards. He smiled and felt whole. But yet at the same time, he felt whole but felt incomplete at the same time. Him and Millenia got up and walked back to her house. Millenia kissed Sage good night and went inside. Her cheeks were still red from what happened before. Sage walked himself back home. When he got back in, he told his mom the good news. After talks of what Sage and Millenia were gonna do with their new life together, Sage went to his room. When he got back in, he saw the book waiting for him. He had completely forgot about all of that. He sat down and began to read through it. What he found, he wasn't expecting.
His ancestor, Cyrus, was a powerful man. He was the one responsible for the deaths of the people that moved out of the Blessed Society. Cyrus had the power to control not only plant life, but human life too. He could give or take life. He saw the people who wanted out traitors to the heavens and planned to be rid of them, like they were a virus. Cyrus had tricked them by thinking they'd be getting there own place to live, but it fact, when out of the Blessed Society's boundaries Cyrus killed them all and used their energy to make himself stronger. Cyrus took his time getting back to the city. First he wandered Terra to see how the other people were living. To his surprise, he saw giant building of steel and concrete. Metal domes with wheels and what he knew of small villages were now these colosuss villages. No one would help each other and crime spread like wildfire. He was sickened by what he saw. The world his people cultivated for these viruses to devour as they saw fit was being destroyed. When Cyrus got back, he began to form a tight circle of people, intent on taking the world back. But word got out and Cyrus was locked away and eventually assassinated. But no one knew this happened. This book was the only record of what happened to Cyrus.
Sage was in awe of what he just read. But he kept on reading. He eventually found out that Millenia's family was responsible for imprisoning and killing his ancestor. He was shocked by this. What he found shortly after he couldn't believe. If he wanted to unseal his powers, it involved the blood of her family. He wanted powers, but not at that price. He shut the book and slid it under his bed. He thought if he hid the book and didn't see it, the things inside of it couldn't be true. Maybe it would all just fade away. He tried to sleep after what he read. But he couldn't. He was plagued by nightmares of seeing Millenia dead, and laying at his feet and there was a knife in his hand. He didn't sleep the entire night.
When morning came, he was standing at his window looking upon Millenia's house. He saw her leave and coming for his house. But she didn't have the happy look upon her face she had the previous night. Tears were rolling down her cheek. Sage rushed to the door to greet her and to see what the matter was.
"What's wrong Millenia?"
"I-I can't marry you! I'm so very sorry. Take this," she put his ring in his hand and she ran back to her house. Before she went in, she looked back at Sage, and went in.
He couldn't believe what just happened. He had a hunch of why she couldn't marry him. He knew it wasn't her fault. He knew where to lay the blame. On her father. An emense amount of hatred came over him. He suddenly had a craving for his power, and lucky for him, now he knows where and how to get it.
He planned for the rest of the week about how to get him. He never once set foot out of his room. He began to grow pale. His once pure mind has now been tainted by thoughts of murder, revenge and greed for power. He thought of what he was going to do with his new powers. He thought that he should probably pick up the job his ancestor had been stopped of doing. He was going to teach the people of Terra to not waste the planet. If there was no one left, no one could harm the planet he thought. He had everything together. He was gonna make his move.
The night he finally left his room, he saw Fiona was curled up in front of his door. She woke up cause she felt his presence. She rubbed up against his leg. Sage, picked up his kitten and scratched her belly. She began to playfully bite at his fingers. He smiled at the kitten and put her back down.
"You gotta stay here tonight Fiona. Make sure mom is safe."
Fiona walked to Sage mom's room and jumped up on the bed. She curled up into a ball and fell asleep there.
Sage went to Millenia's house to get revenge. He got into the house, because he knew the doors were always unlocked because there was no need to lock them. He snuck up to father's room. He opened the door quitely. He saw father was sleeping peacefully. He crept over to the bed and took out a knife. Sage took a deep breath and closed his eyes. He let the his hands guide the knife. Sage never opened his eyes, neither did father. Neither of them made a sound.
Blood covered Sage's hands. He felt the uneasiness come over him again. He let out a yell, a yell fueled by emense pain. A pain in his spirit. He felt something new though too. He had powers. He began tok play with his powers. Flowers sprang up from fathers now lifeless body. Where the blood went, a trail of dark red tulips bloomed. Millenia rushed into her fathers room to see what the noise was.
"Sage! What...who...you didn't..."
"I'm sorry Millenia. But guess what, we can get married now and not only that, I can use my powers now!"
"You did this because you wanted power?! You aren't the man I love!"
Sage was struck by what she said. It was no knife, but it pierced his heart like it was.
"I'm sorry Millenia...take care of Fiona and mom for me..."
Sage ran out of the house. He ran to the boundaries of the Blessed Society. He looked back, he saw lights in the houses. People knew what he did by now. He couldn't go back, he couldn't only go forward. He did all of that for power. A power that he didn't even need. His anger overtook him. He fell to his knees. Tears ran down his face. He pounded on the ground. When he did, flowers would bloom where he pounded his fists.
"I'm a murderer now. I can't go back. I've lost myself, and I've lost everything that I loved. There's only one thing to do now."
He got up and dusted himself off. The tears were wiped away. A calm face took over the face that was once crying. He left the boundaries of the city.
He was going to pick up where Cyrus left off.
