HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY!
As we celebrate International Women's Day (March 8), we are
reminded of the many challenges to women's equality that we
still face. Around the world, millions of women are still denied
the education, health care, and other services that could
dramatically improve their lives.
On this day, we also celebrate a victory: After days of
prolonged negotiation, threats to break global consensus, and
failed strong-arm tactics by the Bush administration, the U.S.
Delegation to the UN Commission on the Status of Women withdrew
its amendment to insert anti-abortion language into the
political declaration reaffirming the Beijing Platform for
Action, and ultimately reaffirmed the Beijing agreement.
