Craziness

Things just keep getting crazier. First the whole thing at Virginia Tech, which is really just hard for me to even imagine. Then, the mayor of Nagasaki (NOT Nirasaki where I live) was shot by a Yakuza (gang member) for such completely and utterly stupid reason (the city wouldn't pay to repair the Yakuza's car that was damaged in road construction or something). Please remember that there are basically no guns in Japan, well, no legal guns. I think it's more common for knives to be used as weapons but anyway, this Yakuza guy got his hands on a gun. And now the videos from the Virginia killer have come out. And again, I don't really know what to say about them. I feel very removed from it though, I don't know if it's because I am in Japan and it's so far from these people's thoughts, or what. I talked about it briefly with a teacher, she seemed to be under the impression that everyone in America is packing heat. Most people here seem to believe that, actually.

One man, when interviewed about the Mayor said something like, well we aren't as bad as America or something. They see America as this incredibly dangerous place where bad things always happen. But bad things happen here too. A few weeks ago, a British girl was killed by a Japanese man in his apartment for apparently no reason (or none that I know of). My friend was mugged in a small Japanese city. She never got mugged in Iowa City. Maybe it makes them feel safer to think that America is so dangerous and Japan will never be that bad. Ok, that is all I have to say, and I think it's time to teach.
