Marge and I were decorating the tree today, what I feared the most, and she began to tell me about her childhood tree decorating. She said they had a string of sixteen lights and very few ornaments, so placement was critical. On our tree, we have two strands of hundreds of lights and countless ornaments, therefore placement is not critical. From her experience, every ornament and light must be accounted for. From my experience, just throw shiny things at the tree until some stick. She told my how her mother would hang the foil icicles ONE AT A TIME, one per bough.
Now that I know the root of her planning and attempted control of Christmas tree adornment, I'm not grumbly about it. And,I liked hearing more about her childhood.
As we talked I discovered we had begun to fix up the tree cooperatively, with no fussing about over my arrangements.
Hokey holiday bonding at its finest!
