Whoa Da Earthquake!!

Mar 01, 2007 20:50

About 10 minutes ago we just felt our first Earthquake since moving here (last August). The news flash on TV says it was a 4.2, and the website showed people reporting about it from as far as 500km away. I thought a car crashed into the side of the house just to my right.

I remember being on holidya in Los Angeles when they had a quake in about January 1994. Was pretty scary, happened about 3am, and the hotel was swaying for about an hour afterwards. I think the freeway collapsed.

6.7 is pretty big. The swaying you felt afterwards would have been freaky indeed. This one we felt only lasted 10-15 seconds. We only felt it for maybe 5 seconds, and we're 20 miles from the epicenter. We didn't feel the aftershocks (I think there were three of them over 1.0 up to an hour after).

There's been a lot of activity lately in the Berkeley area, although this one didn't happen on any of the real faultlines, a little further away. It was big enough though for the earthquake people to say that this should be a warning to people that they should be ready for a bigger one.

I guess everyone has been waiting for California to fall into the Pacific for a long time now.
