Supernatural: Myths dispelled

Apr 30, 2008 04:09

I've never done this before, and I'll probably never do it again, but I'm afraid it's time I did a little pimping for Supernatural. I know, I know, a lot of you are just plain not interested, but please hear me out. I honestly believe it's one of the best shows on TV right now, and it's about time it started getting the respect and higher ratings ( Read more... )

Heh!

I'm not sure Supernatural will ever really be for me, but I certainly won't claim it's a bad show. I have enjoyed several of the episodes I've seen, but never in an "omg must watch more!" kind of way, y'know? It's hard to put a finger on what exactly it is that doesn't enthrall me about it, though the male-centric-ness (which, even if there are women, it's definitely a male-centric show, yes?) is part of it. Maybe one of these days I'll give it a whirl. The "to watch" list is so long, though, and I must admit that this one is pretty far down the list.

But maybe if you decide to watch Farscape, I'll watch Supernatural! :D

You know, most people say after they've watched a few eps that they like it but aren't exactly a diehard fan. A few eps later, they're diehard fans, LOL! I think it's just a show that has to grow on you or something, or maybe it's a case of the storyline getting better and more intense as the series progresses.

It's definitely male-centric, though, yes. I'll give you that. ;)

(But they're really really awesome males, ohmigosh! :P)

But maybe if you decide to watch Farscape, I'll watch Supernatural! :D

*cringe* Um... uh... well... if you're serious, I'll think about it? (But I don't have to like it, right? :P)

I meant the Farscape thing more as an analogy: that one person's favorite thing ever just doesn't appeal to another person for whatever (just or unjust) reasons, and there's nothing wrong with that. ;)

I know, I was just seeing if you would actually do it. ;)

Great mythbusting, Meg! I would say you've persuaded me to give the show a try, but, well, I've been watching it regularly since last August. *g* The DVDs for the first season were on sale and I was tempted enough to pick them up and see what all the fuss was about. I almost decided not to (I was afraid the horror aspect would be too graphic and gory for my tastes), but then I remembered I loved X-Files, that one of XF's frontrunners had gone on to work for Supernatural, and that I didn't mind Jensen Ackles when he appeared on Dark Angel. Needless to say, I gave it a try. I'm not hooked enough to seek out fic or fandom, but I LOVE the drama and sibling relationship between the brothers. It's definitely one of my favorite shows on TV right now. :)

Thanks! Yeah, at first I thought it would be dumb, and that it would be disrespectful to Christianity, but after only one episode I realized that it was way better than I'd given it credit for, and Houses of the Holy completely turned me around on the disrespecting-Christianity thing. I thought they did a great job in that ep of exploring that side of things while not being completely blatant about it. It's cute that they were concerned about it, though, aww. :)

I didn't really see Malleus Maleficarum as being disrespectful to wicca, but that might just be my personal viewpoint. They made it clear that these were the hardcore, Satan-worshipping kind of witches, and to me that's like... a cult where people worship some random dude as the Messiah as opposed to actual Christianity, you know? It's not the same thing.
