Last Night At The Robin

I had a couple sit at one of my tables. He looked to be in his late forties, with a gray beard and glasses - gave off a real academic vibe. She was obviously much younger, taller than her date, with dark, curly hair piled on her head. He thought she would like our strawberry lemonade, so he ordered two for them. When I delivered the drinks, she ( Read more... )

That shit doesn't happen at Denny's.

If there is a smoking section in this resteraunt I suggest you work there. When I was a server, the smokers were a lot more laid back, you don't have to put up with children (usually), and they really only want coffee and don't want to talk. Plus they tip better. (Since people w/ kids and teenagers usually tip poorly are will not be in the smoking section anyway.)

Seriously, I worked it out and I made about 20% more on average (per table) than the server who worked in the non-smoking section.

One drawback is that the non-smoking section is usually fuller, but once you have your regulars you are set since they will make up around 25 to 75% of your tips on any given night.

I am too high class and artsy for Onion rings and this women here is probably supporting my snobby attitude, but I will eat them anyway. I hope that guy never gets laid.

I can see how working in the smoking section may bring higher tips, especially at a restaurant like the Robin where there is a full bar, but, alas, my asthema and sinuses could not take it. I'm fortunate to work my second job at an establishment that's completely non-smoking. Not something you find too often out here in the midwest. Also, I've found that very few of these dutch people tip more than 15% - which is just another thing they're behind the times about. No matter how cute and nice I am, I still barely scrape by with that 15%. Bastards. No, I take that back. They give me spending money, ridiculously small as it is.
...
I'm certain you would tip me 20% Thomas. Thank you in advance.
