As many of you know, I've just gotten the computer set up and internet turned on at my new apartment.  I pushed, and the decision was made for us to get a cable connection to the worldwideweb so I could start writing more in the evenings

keith is right -- but I'm one of those lazy (and scared!) people that need computer-savvy people to do re-insallation stuff like that for me. Doesn't sound like you have someone there (have you started blabbing about your computer problems to everyone? You should, maybe you have a friend there in MI who would come over and take a look).

You should definitely take his advice on backing up -- at the very least, your writing! Sounds like most is online, but copy your files to a flash drive or external hard drive for safety.

As I mentioned last night, definitely run anti-virus and adware software. Clear all cookies, up your Internet security, delete programs/files you don't need, do a disk clean-up & defragment your hard drive. Also, try using Firefox instead of Explorer. I've always had infinitely less problems with that browser.
