For Authors: How to Use Banners

May 31, 2012 15:26

The banner artists who post to this community design loads of banners for nominated authors, reviewers who meet their reviewing goal, and the award winners. Of course, all of that work isn't nearly as useful as it could be if authors and reviewers don't know how to use the banners. Read on if you need help with that.

All of these banners are posted to sites that allow hot-linking. That basically means you can leave the banner on the website where it's posted and just tell your archive or blog or whatever to display the banner wherever you want to. It keeps you from having to upload the banner to some place where you have control over. But there are millions of images posted to the web, and you need to tell your website precisely which one to display. To do that you need the image URL.

Luckily, getting the image URL is fairly simple. Find the banner you want to use and right-click on it (command-click on a Mac). You will see an option like "Copy Image Link" or "Copy Image URL." Click on that and the link where the banner is posted will be copied to your clipboard. You now have access to the link anywhere you can paste in text; just type ctrl-v (command-v on a Mac) and it should paste in the link where the banner is posted.

Now you have to tell your website to display the image at that link. How exactly you do this varies a lot depending on the type of archive, website builder, etc. that you use. Ask yourself this question: if you wanted to make a word bold, would you highlight the text and click a button (often a B in heavy type)? Then you are using a WYSIWYG or rich-text editor. Or would you type before the bolded word and after it? That's a HTML editor.

for WYSIWYG editors:

  1. Open the page where you want to display the text.
  2. Position your cursor precisely where you want to display the banner.
  3. Click the button to insert a graphic. Usually this looks like a framed picture of some kind.
  4. Paste in the URL you copied above.
  5. Fill out the other parts of the form as necessary and click the "OK" or "Submit" button.

for HTML editors:

  1. Open the page where you want to display the text.
  2. Position your cursor precisely where you want to display the banner.
  3. Type in the string of text
, only change LINK to the URL you copied above.

And that's it! That should display the image on the webpage for you. If you have further problems you should really take it up with the tech support of the archive or whatever site you are working with.

Remember: always respect the rules of your site. If you are unsure whether they allow graphics or mentions of awards won, check with your site admin.
