I've decided to start a second business to fill the gaps when freelance visual effects work is slow (which it has been for the past many months). For some reason freelance VFX TD's are the first to go in a recession and for health reasons I am not about to sign on for 80-hour work weeks at Weta Digital so it is time to try something different.
What is pictured above is a small commercial kitchen which we are installing in our home (the rumpus room to be precise) and in this room I will be brewing boutique batches of beer. It's been a huge amount of work to figure out what all is required in the way of paperwork and what will be needed to brew 50L (15 gallons) or 1 keg of beer at a time to supply local cafés in Upper Hutt. Only a few things remain to be fitted in the brewery room and then a bunch of stainless, a fridge, some hoses and ingredients will be moved in and I can start commissioning the space and getting ready to apply for an environmental health certificate and becoming a NZ Customs Controlled Area (where alcohol is made).
