Concerns for offshore oil drilling.

Jun 28, 2010 12:17

Here is an email which I am sending to various MPs in New Zealand. You can write in too, if you want, using the Parliamentary web site.

Dear Minister,

I am writing because I am concerned that the offshore oil exploration around New Zealand could result in a disaster of similar proportions to the one which is currently taking place in the Gulf of Mexico. What, if any, steps have been taken to put in place an independent review body (one who is not paid for by oil interests) to oversee the safety procedures which exploration companies are taking?

I am aware of the tremendous potential wealth which is in the ground and under the sea around New Zealand, but it's not worth the cost - at any price - if it results in a scenario like the horror story which is unfolding off the shores of Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and beyond.

What can we, the people of New Zealand, do to hold government accountable and to honor their role as stewards of the land for future generations rather than fall prey to their greed for quick profits?

I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
Meesto
