Well, the timeline's been screwed to from here and back... but basically.... going according to the television timeline:

John was born in 1983.
The events of the second movie happen in 1997, when John's thirteen.
The television series starts in 1999, when John's fifteen.
They timetravel to 2007, John's still fifteen.

In the meantime, Derek was born in 1995-96, and Kyle is born in 2002, hence they're kidlets if you factor in the timejump.

There's more detail but it'll probably make your head hurty?

I'd rather have some kind of answer than just oscillating between 'wtf' and 'stfu' as I'm watching.

The time line is a great help. Does John leap again?

Well, I linked you my insane timeline over at ij and there's more at the Terminator wikis.

Nah, no more time travel for John. Unless the television writers decide to throw that in.

Oh, it's also worth noting that the date of Judgment Day keeps getting pushed back further and further in each movie/series.

When was the original Judgment Day? I've long since forgotten.

In (T1 &) T2 it's August 29, 1997 at 2:47 a.m.

Skynet previously went online on August 4.

For the television show, it's April 21, 2011. (Skynet goes online on April 19th.)

Realistically, I don't think we could manage anything even like Skynet until around 2050. First there's that AI problem, and then there's the problem of people trusting it with active weapons.

Of course, I suspect I can think of what "went wrong" with Skynet. If you look at the numbers of people dying each year from auto accidents, weapons in the home, and drug (let alone alcohol) use, it's a wonder anyone is still alive. Comparing those figures to the last several wars, it becomes obvious we are in the middle of a world war with an unknown enemy.

From there, it's just a matter of going after the people who are doing the most damage in terms of lost lives, and working your way down the list until there are no lost lives from anything other than "natural causes".

Really, one of the main euphemisms we have is "peace".
