flood update and other stuff

Hello all. I hope everyone had a great 4th of July. John's mom was in town and we bbq'd and hung out. I'm not breastfeeding anymore so I got to enjoy a lovely shiraz with my kabobs. Being back off the wagon is wonderful! I really missed my wine. I've also discovered a new enjoyment of beer that I never knew before.

Life here has started to settle down again. We were evacuated from our lab for almost a week due to the flood. When we finally got back in, we gave everything a good cleaning which was nice. The lab was pretty dirty and unorganized. However, when it rains it pours. The day we were let back in, a freezer broke and we had to lug everything from the freezer upstairs (through the animal room again!) to a back-up freezer downstairs. To add insult to injury our DNA sequencer (the most important piece of equipment) is down. The lab has essentially been non-functioning for 2 weeks now.

I got to experience my first annual SI picnic on Thursday. They set up tents on the mall between the Washington Monument and the capital building and had several different food choices (this year was Native America, Latin, Canadian, and New Orleans). Very tasty (and free).

John now has a job, which is nice because we need the second income but, he really doesn't like it and the hours are horrible. He's basically out of the house for 12 hours a day, which leaves very little time for him to spend with the girls. He's still looking for other jobs.

Erin is such a little ham. She loved having her grandmas here over the past few months because she had someone new to show off for. She is slowly making the transition to the "big girl bed" which has actually been harder on me since I've had to sleep in the bed with her for some portion of the night. Last night she slept the entire night by herself which was great. She's also started using the potty. Sorry to share all this, but no one at work knows how exciting this is for us. We're so excited we had to write these events on the calender!

Moira is rolling over like a champ and she's making a concerted effort to crawl. Unfortunately, she hasn't been able to get up on her hands and knees at the same time, it's either one or the other. Despite this, she is very mobile and can roll from one side of the living room to the other in a matter of seconds.

Well, I better run. The World Cup game is starting soon and even though it's third place game, Germany should make it interesting since they're playing in front of the home crowd.
