My career:
When I began studying biology as an undergrad, I didn't truly appreciate what I wanted as a career as much as I did the following summer. I landed an internship at NIH and spent a summer following a group of awesome scientists around, and even conducted a small project of my own. I wanted to pursue answers to some large questions. I wanted to go to work in jeans and work with not just my mind but also my hands. I wanted to feel satisfied that I had put some real work behind me each day. Science can afford you this if you know where to find it.

It wasn't until other areas of my life started to bleed in on me (including learning more about myself) that I realized that there was a whole other element of enjoyment that I am missing from my career: the ability to share what I love with others. Sure, I can converse fairly well with other people of similar training. We can talk about our research and funding and even delve into some great speculation. Really though, none of it charges me as much as helping someone live their life thanks to what scientists have learned. Medicine is at this junction of research and application, and somehow I'd like to be able to have both in my career.

I want it all: I want to see science in action in the lab and in a clinic. I want to teach as well. I want to share with the world how freaking cool science can be.

My pet:

This is Ozzie. He isn't alway this solemn.

Exhibit A:

BONK!

Still, he's a sweet lil guy:

To be honest though, he's kinda dumb. I think I keep on expecting a dog but really... he's a cat.

The boyfriend:
Ryan is... Ryan. He's great. Lessee...
We met in college. There were a bunch of Ryans and so my friend Kate would distinguish between the two in the physics major by calling them Hot Physics Ryan and Punk Ryan. Of course, my Ryan is the punk one, haha. Everyone either knew him or knew OF him at school. It was hard to miss him: he was the only one in docs and a jacket with patches and spikes on it. He was also extremely friendly. He'd smile and say hi to everyone while walking on campus.

These days, he's a physics grad student here at UVA. Unfortunately, he doesn't actually live in Charlottesville, but instead lives about two hours away in Newport News where he can do his research in accelerator physics at the Jefferson Labs. We still manage to see one another quite a bit. I either drive over to see him or he comes here where not only does he get to see me, but the majority of his family, all living in Charlottesville.

We're very similar in personality, I'm told. Personally I would agree except that he's way more extroverted than me. Still, I think so far he understands me better than anyone else I know.

Anything, because I don't post enough:
So next week, I'm going to California to visit Kate! Apparently we'll be riding bikes like good little indie kids. Also, there will be beer drinking on porches avoiding bees. Yes.

I leave you now with pictures of the flowers that Ryan gave me (just because):
