Smile, a Naruto fanfic

Oct 08, 2006 15:09

Pairing: one-sided NaruHina, KibaHina
Summary: Naruto realizes she never smiles that way for him anymore.

--------------------
When he finally realizes what she feels for him, it is already too late. For is it no longer a matter of how she feels, but of how she felt.

She really did love Naruto-kun, she knows, for every time she saw him, she would smile and pour her heart into it.

He is amazed at his own blindness; how could he have never noticed it before? Sakura only shook her head at this when he comes whining to her, and does not to say anything about how it was amazingly obvious it had been and everyone knew about it.

But now she has someone else to give that smile to.

He can’t help but think of the shrewd observation someone made once upon a time. You don’t know how much something means to you until it is gone.

While she had admired Naruto-kun for his confidence, brashness, determination, and all those other qualities, she also knew he was set on someone else.

He never knew how much he missed that smile she would give him every time she was near him. It was really quite a cute smile despite its shyness, but maybe that’s that made it cute. She always seemed to be trying to make a statement with that smile since she couldn’t with her words. He never realized exactly how much was in that smile until he saw her once day on the training field, watching the dog-boy training. She was resting in the background and she held that same shy smile he had always seen her with when she was looking at him.

And slowly, without her realizing it, she had begun to direct her smile at someone else. She woke up one day realizing she was over him, that in her smile for him in which she had poured all her feelings of love, admiration, worry, and desire had slowly been drained of those feelings. Now she only smiled at Naruto-kun as she would with any other person except maybe with an extra dash of admiration that was always there.

He had walked home slowly, puzzled. He could not figure out why seeing that smile on her face for the dog-boy had bothered him so much. It was only later when he understood, that smile is…was mine…what happened? And it was then he realized that she never smiled that way for anyone else before except for himself, except he doesn’t remember her smiling like that at him for a long while.

She found herself smiling more and more at her teammate when resting in the background. It had begun as a shy interest in her new teammate, but now it was a shy observance filled with things she never thought she’d have for someone else.

And he realizes, in a rush, all that he harbored for the shy girl. And he also realizes that the smile was so she would be noticed, but he was too slow; and now that he has realized, it was much too late.

She is content. He lies on the ground next to her after training, fingers curled together. He grins a toothy grin at her, whispering in her ear teasingly, “I saw you smiling at me. Liked the view?” She smiles softly back in reply. He has and always had noticed her smile.
