Okay, so C.J. Cherryh wrote these amazing series of science fiction books which deals with the interactions between three groups of people.
See, here's how it was: Earth sent out a bunch of ships to set up space stations and they in turn sent out more ships and so on and so on. Because of the time lag involved in these distances, the farther they got from Earth, the more different the culture became.
As time went on, the people working on the ships found they had more in common with each other and less with the stations, so they chose to claim no station as their home, but instead refer to their ship. These became the Merchanters, the ones responsible for the great circle of trade that kept Earth going and the stations viable.
Eventually, the chain of stations extended so far that the newest stations had so little to do with Earth that they created their own values and culture, with an unique focus on genetics. They became able to mix and match gene sets to create the perfect farmer, worker, or soldier. They became known as Union.
When Earth got wind of all this, they were like 'Dude, no. We're in control here.' So they sent out a fleet of ships to impose law and order. Only they failed. Miserably.
The books are all about the interplay between these three factions and it's really fascinating and you need to go find them.
Highlander: So, there are these Immortals running around, trying to kill each other for the sake of the mysterious Game. It's very silly, but it was one of my first fandoms and I totally had a crush on Adrian Paul and Christopher Lambert.
Peter Wingfield: He played a very cool Immortal on Highlander by the name of Methos. Methos was the oldest Immortal (over 6,000 years) and was charming, witty, and snarky as all hell.
Icons:
Oh man, this takes me back. It was my first foray into online roleplaying. I'd found this MUSH called Ankh-Mush and it was shiny and people RP'd Les Miserables there. So I joined up, created a few Marie-Suzettes. Eventually I acquired an Enjolras. Who had a thing for how pretty R's eyes looked. So Abby made me this icon for him and the rest is history. XD
I love this. I'd been whining about how I needed Roman/Latin icons and one of my lj friends made this for me.
This one's new! I was tooling around on obsessiveicons, saw that, and wanted it.
So this is a bit like stalking and I am so sorry for how potentially creepy this is, but I stumbled upon this entry (talk about necromancy, right?) by searching for "Ankh MUSH" on Google...
...because, you see, as the most RIDICULOUS and Mary Sue-esque teenager to ever walk the earth (I think I was 14 or 15...) I was on Ankh. For a while. And I didn't ever really get absurdly involved in things, because you all knew each other pretty well and I was a total stranger, but for a few scenes, anyway, I was Cosette.
And I think about how silly and awful it was on my end and can't help but laugh. But, you know, teenager! I... we... weren't we all Mary Sues once?
