Gundam W fever

Sep 14, 2007 16:20

I had the TV on at 10:30 pm because it's my habit to relax while watching the news. It happened to be on a different channel, though. I thought it was a joke when I saw/heard the prelude to the OP. Oh my god it's Gundam Wing O_O Ahhh the memories...!! Re-runs are nothing to be excited about in US because they usually air the series several times, ( Read more... )

Very interesting to get the Japanese fan perepective on the anime. Those of us Westerners who don't speka Japanese miss out on a lot. So Japanese men like girl like Relena, huh? =) The innocent yet dominant woman doesn't go over to well were I live. I have many theories about the female characters in GW and the reason for why they're simply not popular among female fans here, even ones who aren't into yaoi, but it's really all just random speculation, as I have no real knowledge about how things are in Japan in this modern age.

Poor Trowa's hair often looks like he just had an eletric shock. He need's to get another hair stylish. In the few pictures where he's drawn from the right angle (like the one in my avatar) he's frightfully bishounen like, though. :-P'

Hehe, yes men in Japan would love to serve girls like Relena XD
It'd be great to hear your opinion on GW! O_O I'm really interested in
Westerners' take on the series...

That Trowa in your icon is elegant XO I didn't notice he's the only orthodox
bishounen of the five pilots until recently...all because of that electrick-shock
hairstyle O__O I think Trowa with tied hair would look nice too! X)

Hm... I think that over here, for a female character to go over well she would have to be either very suave in combination with the dominant side, more like Une (minus Une's sycophantic sides where she fusses over Treize, that tendency in the female GW characters to fuss like that over some man is really why they don't go over well with the Western audience, I think), or else an innocent little girl who's sweet and well intended.

Heh, are you sure you really want to see my more passionate fandom rants? I don't write them very often, but every now and then I find something about the GW fandom that annoys me and write an angry rant about it that I f-lock, because of past experiences when I've shared those kind of opinions with people who took offense...

I hadn't thought about any of the gundam boys as a classic bishounen either, maybe because theyäre a bit too young. In EW thought, when we get to see Trowa shirtless, he had grown a bit of muscle. :) And he so wouldn't like like himsel in a different haircut.

Thank you for your comments on GW!! I've added you if you mind X)
Exactly what I thought about anti-Relena-ism. Relena pestering him shouting in the air "Heerooo come and kill me!" was just too much for the fans in the West, I noticed ^^; What freaked me out about the character was that her limousine is pink and she's pampered by crowd of classmates at school ^-^; And about Lady and Noin constantly fretting about the men, that's the pitiful fantasy of many Japanese men... being chased by strong dominant officer-type women XD

Last night I was reading this fanfic this fanfic my dear LJ buddy here showed me.
It's a hilarious one with Trowa as the leading character X)
I do think Trowa is a traditional bishounen type, even he's a bit young (but his age is actually unknown :9
I'm now fond of his hairstyle too.*^-^*

I have a feeling that the creators of GW did not fully expect the amount of female fans it would draw. If they had, perhaps the female characters would be more adapted to appeal to other women as well, rather than just the fantasies of Japanese men. =) There are certainly things I like about some of then, Une has her bright moments (particularly in the beginning, when she still has her buns) and Dorothy is a favourite of mine. Yet Dorothy really is the only female characters who is not doting on some man. And none of the male characters pay half as much attention to the women chasing them as they women pay them. The whole "stoic man and his loyal woman" notion is probably found offensive by many female fans over here, I don't know if it's any different in Japan. Just once, I'd like to see a stoic heroine have a loyal man doting on her, in an anime. When that can't be had in GW, I suppose women just turn to the male characters and pair them up with each other so that they can have equal relationships (even though, ironically, in many ( ... )

I know, GW doesn't seem like a series aimed at female viewers. It's Gundam-centered, with episodes that consist mostly of battles which must be painfully boring for most female viewers to watch and follow. =O ( ... )

Nah, I think Trowa is the same age as other G pilots. See how very light he is? Only 44kg! Besides he copes up with the others pretty much the same way as they do with each other. He maybe more smart and like a silent leader (I forgot the episode number but Wufei Quatre and Duo were having some argument on whether to attack MOII or Libra and Trowa out of the blues voiced his opinion which everyone agreed upon, even Wufei, who prefers to believe in himself more) but Heero too is the same type. Trowa may have gotten some muscles but remember he works with the circus where you have way too many chores and besides he was a soldier at even a younger age than Heero. That would do that to anyone ( ... )

I know, the pilots are supposed to be around 156 cm...! They're short and light, and I heard somewhere in a forum that it's because there is an unspoken rule that Gundam pilots must be children. I can be sort of conviced if Trowa is 15, but Lady Une and Treize! O_O; I think Sally is the one with convincing age setting. *I love her btw* I was about to ask you where you're from, until I saw on your profile your location is Saudi Arabia... How unusual!! Excuse my excitement I knew no Arabic anime otaku 8D Great to get to know you and It's be super great to hear about fandom among Arabic people >u< I grew up in Tokyo and then spent a few years in US. That's when I saw the US dub-censored version of GW. I know nothing of Arabic but maybe the Arabic itself is a polite language? The pilots talking courteously to each other sounds interesting...even Duo and Wufei? XD In Japanese, Quatre is the only one who speaks with honorific language. He’s my very fave too... 8D

What about Lady Une? She IS the same age as Sally that is 19.
Fandom among Arabian people? Well excuse me but I am going crazy trying to find a friend with whom I can talk about animes. If there are people here who are intrested in animes, then they all speak Arabic, which I too learned after watching animes in arabic for 3 years (one of my greatest achievement-learned arabic just watching anime<3) but I speak Lebanon Arabic and they speak Saudi Arabic which I have trouble grasping and anyways no one around me likes anime. Wait I forgot to tell you I am an Indian living in KSA (kingdom of Saudi Arabia). So Arabic isn't my native tongue but by now I learned many languages just because of animes and online anime friends ( ... )

?? 8O From what I know, Lady Une is 19 and Sally Po is 37-year-old. I think that's surprisingly old compared with other characters. It's a mystery, I wonder why....

Aww so much is censored XO but GW wouldn't have been aired without censorship, so I guess we should be grateful.
Indian GW is as rare, weeee!! I had Indian friends back when I was in US...none of them watched TV, let alone anime...

NO!! She is 19 and therefore Noin and Sally do become friends cuz they are both 19 (ok, this sounds lame that friendship depends on age but....).
And the site which I gave you is the official Gundam Wing site in English! -_-
And which you gave me, is it official Gundam W website in Japanese?
Jeez, I don't think I will believe she is 27 ^^;; Or else it will lead me to reform way too many of my theories ^^;

yep that's the Sunrise Japanese official site. Click characters, then the pic of Sally and in the upper right it states 27. I've read in forums in Japanese about how different sites in Eng has different ages of Sally (Eng wikipedia says she's 22 ^^;) I don't know why it says 19 on the English site, but the Japanese official site and other official sources have always stated Sally to be 27 O_O; Whatever their age I personally think all those charas should be at least 25, and Treize at least 40! XD

**there's currently construction going on in my room so plz wait a bit for your Nico account ;)

Will let you know as soon as I'm done with the task ^o^

I can wait forever ^^
Uh....Treize 40^^; I agree they all are too young, but I find them all so adorable and cute. And because they are my age, I find it more entertaining to puzzle out their situations and feeling (though I agree their emotions are anything but ours).
