cmon. you know you like my entries too much for me to lj cut these.
happy mother's day! from the mother's day intermission:
personally tailored gifts for your mom Mother’s Day is only two days away. For every one of you who bought your mom a gift in February and sent it to her a week ago, there are probably 100 of you who have no clue what to get your mom or didn’t even realize that Mother’s Day is already upon us. This list is for you. While your mom might receive the gift a little late, that’s far better than being forgotten. Hopefully this list can generate at least some ideas for moms of all shapes and sizes.
If your mom....
... makes Martha Stewart look like a summer camp craft counselor: Send her aluminum foil, your unwashed laundry, and a giant tub of paste and then ask her to make sugar cookies out of them. Bam!
...has a green thumb: Send her seed packets of her favorite plants. If that doesn’t seem like enough, search for a funky watering can. Target.com actually has some good ones.
...kills every living plant that she touches: Get her a garden gnome. I personally find these a little eerie, but at least there’ll be something living in your mom’s garden. Until someone tries to steal the creepy dude, that is. Oh well.
...cries every time you come home: Find a picture of the two of you and put it in a cute frame. Extra points if it’s a picture from your fifth birthday party. Guaranteed tear jerker.
...lives close to Stanford: Take her out to brunch. Nothing’s better than some quality time over hash browns. Even better? Make your mom brunch, kid style. Remember when you’d “cook” your mom a bowl of rice krispies, put it on a tray with some burnt toast and bring it to her in bed? Those were the days. Sure she’ll be grossed out, but she’ll smile for the memories. Aw.
.... would hang out at MoonBean’s as opposed to the CoHo: Purchase her some tea from teaforte.com. Both the quirky, pyramid shape of the tea bags and their delicious contents are guaranteed to delight.
... likes to cook: Get her a set of personalized spatulas from williams-sonoma.com. Nothing says “I love you” like a set of spatulas, especially if you have them inscribed with “I love you.”
...likes to eat: Bake her something! Ask your friends in co-ops, row houses or Mirielees if you can make use of their kitchens. If you’re lazy or only know how to use an Easy Bake Oven, Amazon.com will help you order every kind of food imaginable. In two clicks you can order your mom some baklava and a jar of Mister Mustard Hot Mustard. Mmmm.
...likes Oprah: Get her something from Oprah’s list of Favorite Things, the “O List” if you will (just Google it). Unfortunately (but not surprisingly) Oprah’s favorite things are pretty expensive, but there are a few good deals hidden in there. The categories range from food to technological gadgets, so there is something for everyone. I’d be wary of the clothes category, though. No one should have that much cashmere in their wardrobes. Nor own 10 velour sweat suits. Yikes.
...enjoys reading: Do not buy her the first bargain book you see at Borders, no matter how pretty the pictures are. If you don’t know what kind of books your mom likes, maybe you should just get her a nice bookmark. Or, if she doesn’t have much time for reading, consider getting her a subscription to a magazine.
...likes Oprah AND reading: Duh. Check out the list of reads from Oprah’s Book Club. Most of her chosen books even come in Oprah versions with special Oprah-approved book jackets and Oprah-generated reading questions. No, but seriously, she has pretty good taste for the most part. You won’t find the “Da Vinci Code” on this list.
...spends more time on her laptop than you do: Check out the gadgets at funusb.com. They’re all fun and they are all powered by a USB drive (surprise!). They have everything from heated gloves to an aromatherapy oil burner. I kid you not.
...has a sweet tooth but also likes flowers: Instead spending lots of money on a bouquet of roses, go with a cookie bouquet instead. Not only are these adorably decorated sugar cookies absolutely delicious, but they also don’t require water or confusing packets of soggy plant food.
http://www.cookiesbydesign.com/ ....wears her “Stanford Mom” T-shirt at least once a week: Send her a paper you got an “A” on or your best problem set along with a set of snazzy Stanford magnets. This way she can proudly display your work where it belongs: on the refrigerator. With any luck, your new achievement might edge out the state capitals test that’s been hanging out on the fridge door since second grade. Oh Boise.
...is more athletic than Sporty Spice: Get her an armband for her svelte iPod. Or, make her a fun workout mix CD. Think more Paula Abdul and less Belle and Sebastian.
...loves your siblings more than you: Re-wrap the crappy present she gave you for your last birthday. And then send it to her. Oh, snap!
...is a Mom: Get her a card. I haven’t once met a mom who doesn’t enjoy a good card. And I’ve met a lot of moms in my day. Try to actually spend time looking through them rather than just deftly choosing a cheesy one. General rule of thumb: If the card looks like a bottle of Pepto Bismol mated with a flower patch, put it down. Now. On second thought, maybe you should just make a card. You could even use this article to make a collage (see, it’s useful after all!).
...thinks Mother’s Day is a capitalist scam: Celebrate! You’re off the hook. But you really should send her something. Like maybe one of those atrocious pink cards. It would be...ironic.
...understands that you are a poor and/or lazy college student: just call her on Mother’s Day. If you actually have a conversation with her rather than rushing off after a chorus of “I’m fine,” “I have SO much to do” and “I need sleep,” she will probably appreciate the gesture even more.
mother/daughter movies“The Joy Luck Club” (1993) - Watch this one - which features the stories of four women born in the U.S. and their often turbulent relationships with their mothers - if you want to not-so-subtly hint to your mother that she’s too overbearing. However, also remember to keep in mind that if your mother acts this way, it’s only because she loves you. We hope.
i definitely got one of those aksi packages, even though i somewhat am embittered by the concept of a prebusiness frat and the fact that there are so many asians. my mom got it, and she was sort of touched, but upset that it wasn't tailored to her. i dunno. my sister recently told me that i'm bad at giving gifts, hence my poor ability at gauging what people want, especially in interviews. i dunno. maybe i should just go all out one holiday. i just can't seem to bring myself to do it.
two loves of my life:
desperate housewives: this show is really good. like honestly, ever since the bree wrap-up, i have been consistently awestruck by the episodes. like the characters are all interesting, the storylines are hilarious and captivating, and the conflicts are gripping. the most recent episode's susan/mike rescue and the lynette crying in the bathroom scene. something i learned from the show:
the need to have power over others: i don't have the exact quote, but it was saying how at the basis of all relationships, we want to have power over other people. my idiosyncracies aside, we want our friends to listen to what we have to say. i feel that a lot of feelings with regards to relationships can be explained with this.
veronica mars: okay. lovable characters. all the same good stuff. (spoilers) in the first episode after the hiatus, there was this really incredible moment between piz and veronica. and ... i could just totally identify with veronica. you know, seeing everyone else coupling up. and then piz comes over, this really nice guy who has always had a crush on veronica, and she pulls him outside and is liek "piz, i think i've been misleading you..." and then piz KISSES HER. anyhow. possibly the most swoon-worthy moment of tv i have seen all year. freaking incredible episode.
also watched the most recent episode of grey's with jim. it was decent, but certainly not good. lost has gotten pretty damn incredible in the last 3 episodes. (the ends of the seasons are always strong.) (
a spoiler from the most recent episode)
shear genius is also really good, in my opinion. so tabatha. she's pretty much the coolest character. like there was this one point where each person was given a chance to verbally argue to win something and she's like "i refuse to beg for anything." oh man. you never see such self-respect in reality tv. finally, did you know that some celebrities get $600 haircuts? just normal haircuts? that's absurd.
Tabatha: If I was trapped in a small room with Tyson, I would have to beat him to a pulp. The other part of me wants him to stay around for the competition factor. I really want to kick his ass, and just have that look of bewilderment on his face when I win. That would be so brilliant, I dream about it.
youtube videos. i'm having some difficulty embedding videos right now, so have some youtube links:
sports acrobatics - honestly, one of the coolest videos i've seen in awhile. as in, think cirque-du-soleil with respect to flexibility, strength, and balance. (courtesy greg)
craig boge advances to jeopardy finals - (courtesy the stanford blog)
things that i'm good at. so after getting to stanford, the inevitable question is "what actually makes you special". like i feel like my interests are quite ordinary comparatively, as well as my skillset. however, there are two things that i believe that i am indeed in the 1% of the population for, and that is typing and egyptian ratscrew. (and perhaps my propensity for blogging.) anyhow. (for jim, i would say minesweeper.)
see how fast you can type the alphabet! yeah. eat it.
ratatouille preview - a 9 minute clip. originally, i was decently excited about the new movie, but this preview just got me really, really excited. i have high hopes for the movie.
pirates may be opening thurs night at 8PM puzzle fever. i have been somewhat stricken with puzzle fever. as in:
check out my interactive flyers!
pearls/masyuatomic fusionkakuro various other things that i've learned after surfing the web for a bit:
--atomic fusion is a really great puzzle written by a guy named craig kasper. as my selinker email experience went so well, i definitely plan on emailing him. from his site:
* Drop me a line. I can be reached care of:
craigkas@myway.com * Tip me. (Coming soon) I can't afford to support myself solely as a puzzle creator at this time, much as I would like to. If you tip me for the puzzles I put up here, it enables me to spend more time making puzzles to post here (and less time doing other things.
* Hire me. I can construct pretty much any kind of puzzle, for pretty much any kind of solving audience.
* Host me. To be more precise, host my site. (This is only important if you mind the ads my free hosting provider inserts onto these pages.)
oh, life as a professional puzzle writer.... i still agree that it would be sweet though.
--you can actually register for the google us puzzle championship test and take it for free!! granted, it costs almost nil for them to let you take it, but it still seems so exciting for me. regsiter at:
here. event occurs june16, the sat after finals week.
--i was checking out the site for the world sudoku championship and found this:
a brochure. there are actually 20 or so "standard" sudoku variations. like they don't -just- solve like 5000 sudoku as fast as they can, contrary to what you may think.
--so the genre of puzzles that i am currently pursuing could be considered "math/logic/observation" puzzles. i'm just going to call them MLO puzzles, for short.
the final puzzle at the world sudoku championship:
so... it seems virtually identical to an irregularly shaped sudoku. but the jigsaw idea is a nice spin on the subject.
a recap-ish thing of my life.
soooo..... my hell week is over. it started off on such a bad note, with jim gone. my computer was broken, i was being a flake to some people, i had some sort of eye infection, and i had four freaking midterms. woke up at 8am everyday and culminated with the math midterm which kicked my butt. all in all, things went pretty well. i was not very productive at times, but thursday morning, those 4 hours before that math midterm was due, i was on fire. i'm fairly burnt out as of now, but hopefully i can chill this weekend and do nothing besides puzzles and chilling and movies etc etc etc. and, ofc, THE DANCE SHOWS!!! urban nights AAAND hipnotized. (hipnotized is going to be mindblowing. seriously. so excited.)
28 weeks later. saw 28 weeks later with jim. thoughts: (no spoilers) solid plot, solid scares. it was decently fun.
so me and jim were actually sitting in a theater, and we sit through all the previews, and then the spiderman music comes on. and it turns out that we were IN THE WRONG THEATER. that was embarassing. we then walked out as the movie was starting, which must have been pretty weird, and then went in to the right theater. and it turns out that the BULB HAD GONE OUT, and the movie happened to be 15 minutes delayed so that me and jim could watch the SECOND SET OF TRAILERS. and in n out afterwards.
i don't think i wrote about this, but it should be documented: when we went to see hp4 on the imax, a full-out brawl occurred between two very gangster-looking people because of issues over a seat. the security guard had to come and throw them out in front of an entire cheering audience.
i definitely sort of thought that he was going to come back in with a gun and shoot all of us. actually, a very similra thing happened during a concert i was recording, when i guy just plain stood up and walked out and stopped in the back of the recital hall and pulled open this huge bag. (literally. in the middle of the piece. i'm fairly sure he wasn't completely there.) i think the paranoia is definitely one of the biggest effects of va tech on my subconscious.
other stories from the night: went around with amanda on a quest to try to find joachim (as in, two apple stores), and then buying the refreshments for the staff party.
a one liner recap of one of the points of the last entry: it's so easy not to respect things that you don't own.
sports. to continue what i wrote last time.
recruitment weekend. talked to one of my residents about this. dude, they get really nice treatment when they come. typical schedule: thursday: morning meeting with advisors on how they "blend academics with athletics" and perks of athletes. then they watch practice. they go to sundance for dinner with the coaches. friday night they go do something with the entire team (ie bowling). saturday, they get a tour of campus on a golf cart and watch practice and at night they get to party with the team. pretty intense.
water polo. i was talking to greg, who is currently at the women water polo championship, and how if they won, then the entire team would be partying sunday night, and how if they lost, "a lot of members on the team would be crying." on the one hand, it's pretty impressive how much they can care about this. on the other hand, i just wonder what jules would say, as he honestly believes that there is are not very many good reasons to cry.
"derailing". good word.
another good word: "toroidal". meaning: "like a torus." there's a sudoku variation with irregular shapes such that the top edge loops into the bottom edge and the right edge loops into the left edge, so shapes can go across borders!!!! a pretty sweet variation, imo.
okay. i have to go to HALF MOO BAA with jim, stace, emily, and molly. although i am sure that it will not be lifechanging, greg, no worries.
