But it doesn't mean you were naive, just that they aren't worth you time.

And wow. What an experience. I was in choir in middle and high school and took private voice for a semester in college. But I never encountered anyone in your situation. However, avid fan of American Idol that I am, (LOL) I easily recalled David Archuleta a couple seasons back. He had the same thing you describe, and he, too has recovered after a long time not singing.
That had to be so crushing to hear that your teacher not only didn't believe you, but said such nasty things behind your back. You're super-courageous to get onstage and perform again, especially in front of him.
