I just dunno, my head is still scattered but I want to post some more of Melly-Ory.
This is a short bit, I was going to have more revealed but decided to keep it simpler so the dragon reveal comes next installment which will also hopefully show that Ory can be just as controlled and cryptic as his uncle when he's not Melly-molesting.

‘That father of yours, he should have been back by now’
‘Master Mage Clover and Dragon Firestorm where at the shop. Pa said he was going to finish a few things up then he’d be home’
‘Dragon Firestorm indeed’
‘He spoke to me said my ’hearts path be true’ whatever that means. He was really scary I shouted at him Ma he was so close to the fire and I didn’t know he was a dragon at first.’
‘A dragon at the Blacksmiths?! He couldn’t have minded your shouting dear. Oh don’t worry about that Orelan lovely, the dog will get to the spill in no time’
‘Clumsy. He looked at me and put his hand right in the furnace’
‘humph’
‘You must have just missed them Ory, they left just before I caught you’
‘Hid well. Show off Firestorm.’
‘You hid from them?’
‘Here have another bun dear don‘t you worry about that one the dog will eat it up. So Ory are you not keen on the dragons then? Half the village youth are dreaming about a bond what with Alex being selected’ Ory nodded at Mellander through a mouthful of sticky bun.
‘ humph mages, a Melly is better Ma Frond’
‘Call me Ma lovely everyone else does. You’d not want a bond then?’
‘Ory want Mellymine’
‘I see. Don’t blame you, those dragons sound quite hoity creatures and my Melly is a good lad.’
‘Mellymine treasure’ How his mother could mistake the evil intent on Orelan’s face for sweetness was beyond Melly. He shifted under the bare feet that were climbing his calves, clawed toes scratching.
‘Melly said you’re staying in the city, you must see lots of dragons there?’
‘All challenge and show, Uncle say Hearts path be true not Prides.’
‘Your uncle sounds a wise man.’
‘Wise mm Uncle got his Masmaggy.’
‘That’s his partner?’
‘His Sworn’
Ma Frond was fascinated by Orelan and kept plying him with treats as she grilled him. Only half listening Melly just watched how much sugar his friend could put away, it was little wonder he was always so hyper. That and the feet now in his lap were plenty distracting.
‘So what does your uncle and his sworn er Masmaggy? Do in the city Orelan?’
‘Masmaggy see king, teach, blow things up. Uncle like fire, like Masmaggy.’
‘Your uncle is a mage?’ Melly could see his mother’s effort to interpret that, his own visual was of an older Ory running through fire grinning, while the student mages stared on in horror and the king called for arms. He’d not known Orelan’s kin were important enough to greet the king. Hard to imagine Orelan in clean un-torn clothing acting all respectful and quiet, this meal was the longest he’d seen the boy sit without visible wiggles.
‘No Masmaggy. Uncle is uncle.’ On that statement and Ory inhaling a slippery Mango slice with pleasure bordering on the obscene Melly’s father returned home.
‘Hello my love’ a kiss to his wife’s brow ‘Melly’ a nod to his son ‘and who do we have here then?’
‘This is Melly’s friend Orelan’ the single world friend came out with a wealth of meaning. ‘He’s here with his uncle from the city. Mellander tells me you had some important customers’
‘Well hello there young Orelan.’ he moved to a free seat around the table and the questing feet vanished abruptly as a chair was pulled out. Melly was grateful, he didn’t relish explaining to both his parents why his eyes kept crossing it was bad enough when he’d choked spluttering tea. Not helped by Ory’s decision to tap him thoroughly down with a scrap of cloth.
‘Hello Pa of Mellymine’ Ory seemed oblivious of the look Melly’s father sent them both, his Ma smiled openly.
‘So what did you think of the big scary dragon?’
‘Didn’t say much, watched the furnace mostly, he spoke to our Melly here. Master Mage Clover asked a load of questions, seemed a fine enough chap’
‘Nosy’
‘You’ve met the Mage?’ Having finally eaten his fill having sampled at least one of everything available, several sugared treats and discreetly picked all the Mango out of the bowl of salad, Ory decided it was snuggle time and ignored the question to sidle closer to Melly. Coy smiles and narrowed eyes set on his prey.
With Mellander the middle of five children Ma Frond was no naïve damsel. She soon sent them off to be on their own. Out in the open rather than secreted in Melly’s room! Melly had no doubt at all that it was largely so she could interrogate her husband about his customers and exclaim over Orelan. Everything appeared bearable laying under the old tree in the back yard with Ory snuggling into his side issuing soft purring snores.
Mellander was surprised Orelan didn’t make more of an effort to stay when beds beckoned, there was that intense stare at Melly complete with licking lips but he allowed Ma Fronds pointed goodbyes and well wishes. Bowed low to both her and her husband before grabbing Melly for a fast lip locking kiss that his parents tactfully left them privacy for. There might have been laughter when Melly went back indoors and stumbled straight to his room without pausing. Luckily his younger siblings were staying with friends so couldn’t sing of his rosy cheeks. He made it to his front facing window in no time but there was no sight of a lithe figure dancing down the hill. Shadows danced over the path skipping fast towards town but Melly couldn’t discern a last glimpse of Orelan. Laying in his narrow bed he studied the rafters for ages before sleep claimed him, curling on his side with a pillow taking up the vacuum of his arms.
