Sabin peered into the cave at the sleeping beast. The narrow passage that led to this chamber no longer bothered him, familiarity made his footfalls easy. He and the Summer dragon had long used this as their meeting place, not too high for a strong young man to climb but hidden enough for privacy.
From first meeting their friendship had progressed in jest. Sabin still chuckled over his parents shock at the yearly Dragon Feast. The Winter dragon lighting the festival fire with a spout of flame then poised that the dancing flames brought gold to his pearly scales. His mate ever close.
The wind was remarkably quiet for such a blistery night!
Summer his molten colours those of the fire itself had joined them having come of age. He reclined watching the festivities with bright eyes. Sabin unthinkingly called him a giant lazy lizard, his parents gasping in horror, their apology drowned out by a smug purr and wisp of smoke enough to make Sabin splutter. It had taken chilly nights and a further meeting before his parents accepted they were friends.
As friends they stole time away in their hidden chamber, soft pillows appearing for comfort and as they grew bolder the winds carried new cries as they shuddered down the valley.
But lately Summer had been acting odd. Diffident. Liking his comforts more than was even his norm. Of late Sabin's every departure to the village was met with sulks. Summer refused to leave their cave, sleeping heavily his stomach grumbling with fire.
Looking on his lover with affection it took Sabin time to notice what he held. Summer was curled a great lump of jewelled dragon around a large egg.
'What the..? Summer?' Summer opened one large beautiful eye, blinking at Sabin. He regarded the egg proudly before with a look of reluctance he allowed his magic to swirl free and changed to his human form.
'You have an egg' Sabin felt uncertain. Summer in contrast was practically gloating in pride 'I do, our egg' 'Our egg?' 'I'm a dragon you silly man, we come from eggs' 'But...'
Sabin crawled in close putting his hands to the egg and feeling it thrum with a strong heart beat. 'Our?' 'Ours' His smile was wobbly but he pulled Summer close for a kiss 'this is why you've been grumpy?' 'I am never grumpy, I'm glorious' 'You're a lazy overgrown lizard and we've got an egg' 'not for long' Summer opined ignoring the insults and they both watched excitedly as thin cracks appeared in the shell.
It took a lot of effort of the baby dragon to nibble and claw it's way free then it stood shakily in the broken shell regarding it's parents. Sabin grinned when it fell back on it's butt with a plop. 'Gets that from you' he told Summer fondly reaching for his fingers. Neither taking their eyes off the baby.
'Brrrrrr?' purred the little dragon hopping unsuccessfully up with a flutter of wings too tiny to hold him. Summer carefully reached down to pluck him up and he chirped wildly before snuggling in. Sabin stroked a finger over his scales soft and barely formed.
'So beautiful' 'Of course he is' Summer purred 'he's ours' 'he?' 'he' 'Little Sidney' 'Sidney?' 'There's been enough of you silly lizards and your naming for seasons. Summer stuck out his tongue and baby Sidney made happy chirps.
Of course when the baby dragon was spotted by the villagers his pale green scales the colour of new leaves and his eyes the gold of buttercups he became known as the Spring dragon to the smirk of Summer and his mates exasperation.
