Lots to do, but quick rant.
ABC is planning to do a Fables pilot. Now, you might say "That's great news, Sheree! You adore that series!" But no, it is not great news. I might be a bit more excited if say Showtime or HBO -neither of which I even get- were doing it. They might spend the money to do it justice and have the guts to not censor it all to crap. Maybe. There's just so so so many ways to screw this up. I have very serious doubts that it will at all resemble this awesome comic series, or that it will last past a couple of episodes before it gets canceled.
Cause Fables? Fables is epic. And not only is it epic -with the needings of decent special effects, like Farscape quality and not even Sci Fi could afford that ultimately- but it contains a lot of swearing, sex, and violence. It heralds back to the dark origins of most fairy tales, and I would love to see it done in a style that takes itself seriously. Gritty, even. There's tons of awesome examples of why a network would be unlikely to do it justice if go with it at all, but I'm not willing to spoiler people. :P Just... trust me. It's crazy sick and twisted and I love it. I love the characters, the unique take on these characters and their world, the vast variety of tales drawn from, just... all of it. Fables took over where SIP left off for me. Hell, I'd be almost as scared if ABC decided to do a series based on SIP! And that doesn't require even a sliver of the special effects funds Fables does!
If they spend too much, it's dead. If they spend to little, it's crap... and probably still dead. Then casting... I have this vague irrational fear of Nicolas Cage getting casted as Bigby, but more seriously I just don't know. I'm curious who they plan to get, but also afraid. Been burned too many times there (X-Men's Storm, for example... le sigh...). At least with TV, there's a better chance of getting unknowns. Heroes gives me a little hope. Well casted, and obviously costs some cash in a time when predictable and sadistic reality shows are cheaper and for some reason still popular. But still, I dunno... all of Heroes is still set in the real world. And The Farm Fables will be really hard to pull off. And I guarantee they will censor the hell out of it. If I wanted the watered down kid's version, I'd watch some Disney movies. Fables is for grown-ups.
Clearly, I have a lot of doubts here. I guess we'll see, but I'm not holding my breath.
