Thank you, Gomez, for the coronary last night! :P
I do pride myself on locking down all the snakes like Alcatraz, and with the sorts of enclosures we have its kind of impossible not to (hell, the beauties have keys!) with the exception of Gomez's tub. Even though it's a tub with handles that click down to hold the lid shut, its all too easy to unthinkingly just make sure one side clicked. I have been sleeping odd hours again, and am tired and out of it. When I checked his water, I must not have clicked it down all the way.
When Karen turns in for bed (Gomez and Dana both live in the bedroom) she noticed that his lid was askew. Inside was a fresh shed, a fresh poo, and NO GOMEZ. Heart attack time. Our poor baby was on the lamb!! Armed with flashlights and prayers, we tore apart the bedroom. There are WAY too many places to hide in there, unlike the spartan bunny proofed living room. Eventually, leaning forward deep into the storage abyss that is our closet, I shone the light down and a sweet little face peeked up at me. OMG GOMEZ! He had curled up in a cardboard box there with the abandoned disembodied art school busts of Eryk and Hamoth from
Full Circle. Our poor baby was so cold! I stuck him under my shirt to warm up, cleaned out his tub, then made triple sure it was LOCKED DOWN.
Dana watched all of this with a skeptical bewildered eye as a lizard named after Scully ought to.
The bedroom is a mess now, but the important thing is Gomez is safe and sound and at a healthy temp again. This is the second time he's given me a meltdown -
back when he was an itty baby and we still used Carefresh was the first time with a false escape just to keep me on my toes. We're lucky he's such a chunker, and for the first time ever I am totally grateful that we live in such a small place. There wasn't really many places for him to go. Still, someday, I will have my reptile room and it will be spartan with only the tanks, a shelf or two of herp books, a well blocked under the door space, and nowhere to hide just in case something like this ever happened again (god forbid).
I'm still calming down. Good lord... Maybe updating his icon would be therapeutic. We have better pics of him now, including the one that is our current puter wallpaper.
I gotta say, I'm glad this happened when Karen was home. I won't be seeing her till sometime Friday night because she has a sleep study thing. Yeash.
EDIT: New icon for teh Gomez :)
