“What’s wrong?” Rosalie demanded, suddenly appearing in the doorway.
“Wha- what do you mean?” Alice asked, turning towards the tall blonde.
“Emmett and I were out hunting, and I could hear you pouting from across the river.” Rosalie joined Alice on the couch, reaching for Alice’s hand.
“Oh, you should get back to hunting…” Alice trailed off. Her eyes wandered across the carpet, refusing to look Rosalie in the eye.
“Hey,” Rosalie’s voice was soft. “What’s going on?”
“It’s nothing.” Alice shrugged.
“Did you see something? What is it? Is it that stupid Bella girl again?” Rosalie sneered as the name passed her lips.
“No, it’s just… it’s nothing. Forget about it.” Alice insisted. Rosalie cupped Alice’s face in her hands, locking her in place. Her eyes searched Alice’s; usually a bright gold, but now dull and almost gray.
“You know you can tell me anything, Alice.” Rosalie smiled softly, stroking her thumb across Alice’s smooth cheek.
“I know, Rose.” Alice sighed. “Thanks. I’m just not ready to yet.”
Rosalie nodded, freeing Alice’s face and instead lacing their fingers together. “I know exactly what will cheer you up.” There was a fire in Rosalie’s eyes that gave Alice a terrifying yet excited feeling in the pit of her stomach.
Rosalie stood, pulling Alice with her. She glided over to the open window, and without a moment’s hesitation, stepped out.
“Come on! Don’t be a pussy!” Rosalie called from the ground, even though she knew Alice would be able to hear even a whisper. Alice sighed, but followed her sister anyway.
Once Alice had touched the ground, she found her hand in Rosalie’s tight grip again. Her eyes followed their clasped hands, up Rosalie’s pale arm, and to her eyes, glowing with excitement.
“Let’s go.” Rosalie grinned, and bolted off into the forest. Alice matched her pace easily. She let Rosalie lead her, and paid more attention to the trees whizzing by.
Soon the trees thinned and Rosalie slowed.
“Here we are.” Rosalie announced, moving her arms in a grandiose display of the scenery. Alice sucked in a slow breath, taking in her surroundings.
The two girls stood at the edge of a cliff, overlooking a gushing waterfall that fed into a thin river. The sun glittered off the waves in different places, turning the water golden. Trees of all kinds clustered around the river bank, just begging to be climbed.
“How did you find this place?” Alice asked, sitting down at the edge of the cliff. She let her bare toes dangle over the edge.
“Emmett took me here once.” Rosalie admitted. “Corny, I know. But it’s beautiful all the same.”
“It really is.” Alice grinned. She gestured for Rosalie to take a seat next to her. “The view from up here is so lovely. I’m hardly even nervous.”
“You must be the only vampire afraid of heights.” Rosalie shook her head shamefully.
“Oh, shut up.” Alice laughed, shoving at Rosalie’s arm.
“Hey!” Rosalie grinned, pretending to topple over. “If I go down, I’m taking you with me.”
“I wouldn’t expect anything different.” Alice smiled, and laid her head on Rosalie’s shoulder.
“Feel better?” Rosalie asked quietly.
“Yeah, thanks for bringing me here.” Alice sighed, her breath ruffling Rosalie’s hair.
“Anytime, hun. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
