Name: Rin.
Age: 29
Birthday: November 15th
Affiliation: Konohagakure
Rank: Jounin
Occupation: Field Medic-nin, Hospital Doctor (Trauma Surgeon), Jounin ninja
Registration Number: 010885
Blood Type: A
Height: 6"
Weight: 150 lb
Sexual Orientation: heterosexual to be more precise, we could just say 'Kakami'...
Hair: medium brown, straight, thick, shortish and perpetually sticking out in touseled spikes over his eyes and ears because he doesn't pay attention to it.
Eyes: large, deep brown and extremely expressive.
Skin: a warm sort of honey colour when he's healthy, clear complexion, blushes easily, tans even easier.
Features: Appearance-wise Rin isn't anything remarkable. He's not very handsome, or an impressive presence - he thinks of himself as plain and has missed the fact that some girls think him cute in a boy-next-door kinda way. He's tallish and a little on the skinny side these days (though that doesn't stop his training and missions keeping a good set of muscles on him).
Other Physical Traits: Rin has a surprisingly animated face when he's truly amused or happy, he really does have infectuous good moods. His hands are usually fidgetting or somesuch, a habit that at least keeps his fingers dextrous for his work and perpetually betrays his nerves. Rin's also got pretty big feet for his size (infer from that what you want, peanut gallery).
Identifying Marks: two thick dark purple stripes tattooed on his cheeks that the children in his family would recieve at age five to openly mark them as part of their clan and its religious beliefs.
A red spiral and tail mark of the ANBU high on his left bicep - always has a bandage tied round it to hide it.
A prisoner tag (Konoha 0645/1) branded in small clear digits onto his back, a few inches below and to the right of the base of his neck.
Voice: low, quiet and often sounding a little bit sad.
Physical Fitness: Rin actually has a very high level of stamina and a lot of endurance; but he pushes himself so far and so hard with the kinds of medical jutsu he uses that it doesn't count for as much as it once did. He just gets so lost in what he's doing he forgets what it's doing to him - but for the most part he's fighting fit these days, even if his peak fitness will never be what it once was.
Usual Clothing: Depending on the circumstances, Rin's clothes change pretty drastically. He wears the standard jounin's uniform when he's on mission duty; a civilian suit, shirt and tie if he's just working as a doctor at the hospital (though he tends to be a bit scruffy about it, open collars, loose ties and rolled-up sleeves as standard); and on his own time an old t-shirt or hoodie and older jeans or combats for comfort.
Force of habit means he's always got his forehead protector on him somewhere, even if it's just looped around the strap of his med-kit satchel.
Fighting Style: Though Rin's primary function has always been as medical support he's got a lot of combat expertise. He's grown to place his emphasis on the speed he learned how to summon and use from his sensei - the ultimate expert in that field. Dexterity and dodging enemy attacks is a skill he learned the need for the hardest way after Obiko's death, and he took Tsurude's demands that a medic be able to keep themself safe to keep their team safe to heart (not that it's kept him out of trouble).
As for ninjutsu, Rin knows an array of water and wind jutsu (which was how he made it to jounin status), but usually if he's fighting he uses his medical knowledge to assess a target, and then go for their weakest point with lethal intensity using a blade.
Subtle, bloody and swift above everything else is his fighting style.
Preferred Weapons: his hands and feet and kunai and katana.
Other: Unlike many other medically-fluent ninjas, Rin won't use his medical jutsu as attacks unless there is absolutley no other choice. He had to do it three times during his stint in ANBU and it disturbed him deeply.
He is also weak against genjutsu, unable to break out or resist the effects, though he's quick enough to realize if one's been cast.
Family: Rin's parents were both members of the Kiyoyama clan and moved to Konoha as a young married couple a few years before Rin was born. Rin was their only child, though they had hoped to have a very large family. Rin's father was a carpenter who specialized in furniture; his mother was a herbalist. She died in childbirth when Rin was six, along with the baby; and her husband never recovered from the grief. He died after the final Kyuubi attack on the village, but not before disowning his son over his choice of career. Rin hasn't used the family name since.
Friends: Having lost or estranged his parents young, Rin wound up seeing his cell and senseis as his family. Jimaiya and Sensei did more to raise him than his parents; Obiko was like a sister and Kakami.. well, by the time he was twelve Rin was trying hard to tell himself she was like a very distantly related cousin that it wouldn't be that sacriligiously damning to get with.
Outside his original cell, Rin was and is familiar and friendly with most of the hospital staff (Yakushi-sensei, particularly) but he isn't close to any of them. Which is a little odd to note, but inarguably true.
He and Shizuya have wound up becoming friends and confidants, something that would have happened a lot easier and earlier had they ever been in the same place at the same time even once until the past year and a half.
Asuka and Kureno are both considered friends he's getting closer to as time goes by; he originally related well enough to them when they were outwith Kakami's company - but as they got into their late teens and early twenties Rin distanced himself from them as they grew closer to Kakami. Nowadays though, he does a lot better with them.
Gaia, Aki, Suzumo and other ninjas around his age are also considered friends; though he doesn't see them as often as the others mentioned.
Lover: Hatake Kakami and damn it's been a long time coming. Rin's love for his former teammate has broken his heart a hundred times and driven him to do the bravest, stupidest, darkest, most incredible and most self-destructive things in his life - and now, for reasons he still isn't sure of, she loves him back.
And now nothing else could ever matter more.
Followers: None. Though he does teach classes to both field medic trainees and medical students.
Enemies: None that he knows of, except perhaps the Konoha Councilwoman Dai, who knows certain things about him he wishes nobody did. Before they were wiped out the Uchiha had no love whatsoever for him after he invented and used a technique to transfer a sharingan eye into a non-Uchiha... but that doesn't matter so much now.
Personality Traits: Rin has a lot of trouble separating his heart from his head; which makes him a phenomenal medic and a decent man, but a troubled ninja. His difficulties compartmentalizing mean he never adopted the mindset of a true ninja; nor did he develop any emotional armour. If ever there was somebody with their heart on their sleeve - to his equal credit and detriment - it's always been Rin.
Empathetic, sympathetic and sometimes just plain pathetic in how strongly those qualities drive him; Rin has a lot of heart and it's made life difficult for him and those closest to him. Still, it seems to have made it more worthwhile at the same time - a fact which Rin still struggles to get his head around.
He's kind and loyal by nature, and does his utmost for those around him; but he's also lacking in confidence and in his own self-worth sometimes. He defines himself by his job as a medic (proudly) and a ninja (resignedly) and always finds it hard to deal with knowing how easy it is for the lives he tries to better and preserve to be lost. The end result is somebody who has to fight like hell and be extremely lucky to find some self-worth and doesn't get to hang onto it for long.
(Kakami's working on fixing that last part though, even though she doesn't know it.)
At any rate, Rin's also naturally got every other good quality of a medic. He's curious, self-sacrificing, tenacious, decisive, determined and genius smart (though strangely, that last part of him is the least obvious trait of his). He doesn't know when to quit; is emotional without being tempermental and has a great reverence for life.
Quirks: Fidgets an awful lot, sleepwalks & sleeptalks (though that seems to calm down when Kakami's around), cooks soup when he's unsettled, has a wide array of nervous habits (most obviously biting his lip or rubbing his neck), hums to himself when he's happy, can and will read books upside down, always breaks his glasses.
Loves: Hatake Kakami, healing & medicine, making people feel better, his faith, sunshine, snow, cooking, Konoha and his friends.
Hates: sandwiches, having bad nights, when patients die, having to kill, being alone for longer than a few days, locked rooms.
Fears: losing Kakami, losing his friends and comrades, failing in his duty and wish to look after them.
Dreams/Ambitions: keep healing, keep living, keep with Kakami and maybe uhm... if she would be okay with it one day and it works out that way to maybe get married. maybe.
Hero: His sensei, the Yondaime Hokage.
Gifts/Talents: Rin's greatest gift is his innate and well-tested ability as a healer, followed shortly by his capacity for emotions - particularly love and sympathy. He's also got a lot of talent as a gardener and herbologist, can cook quite well and knows how to dance way better than anybody would ever give him credit for.
Religion: the animist Kiyoyama clan were always defined by their devout religious adherence, going so far as to mark out members of the clan with spiritually significant tattoos at key points in their lives. Their worship translates in a practical sense along the lines of the typical japanese fusion of Shintoism and Buddhism - making pilgrimages to temples and attending and supporting shrines; but a strong element of animism is woven into their interpretation of life. Basically they lead lives of respect and attentiveness to the spirit and gods in all little things; and value peace and life most highly. Rin himself has had a lot of trouble reconciling his religious beliefs with the life he's led, but he needs what it offers too much to give up on it and is a deeply religious person.
Flaws: Rin doesn't have much of an ego and it is a failing. He automatically and always has focused on other people before himself and as a result isn't self-aware enough to take good care of himself or do particularly well on his own. He's also somewhat socially clueless and easily tripped-up (especially around the opposite sex - you can thank his upbringing and Jimaiya for that) - though that's funny as much as anything. Perhaps Rin's most striking flaw is the fact that too often he leads with his heart before his head in a world where you really can't afford to.
Personal History: Rin was born the first child of an intended large brood to a young Kiyoyama couple not long after they emigrated to Konoha. His early life was loving and happy and he was a very quiet and well-behaved child for his kind parents. Though the Third Great Ninja War was happening, Rin was barely aware of it as he spent all of his time with his parents in their secluded house or at the village's Temple.
His mother died in childbirth when he was six and both he and his father were hit hard but stuck close together. When the village's fortunes took such a turn that even children from non-ninja families were needed to attend the Academy, Rin's father hated to let him go and took comfort in his sureity that his gentle and spacey little boy would wash out and come home. Rin didn't: he had amazing natural chakra talents, was a very quick study, had great hand-eye co-ordination... and he befriended Uchiha Obiko. He graduated aged nine, already in preliminary training for medical work, and was handpicked along with Obiko by Konoha's Yellow Flash to fill out a team with her chuunin apprentice, Hatake Kakami.
Over the next two years Rin was trained and supervised by his sensei on field missions with his team, functioning as medical support once he got his full field medic's qualification in his tenth year. He earned Chuunin rank aged eleven and the missions the four of them were sent on only became more difficult, desperate and bloody. Rin's father disowned him, rather than fact the fact he'd lose his son to the bloody battlefield anyway, and Rin came to rely on his team as his family - dysfunctional disaster though they were. When Kakami was promoted to Jounin when they were thirteen what little stability the four of them had fell apart. Obiko was killed in the successful rescue of Rin from Iwa ninjas and he transplanted her sharingan eye into Kakami.
This found him the target of Uchiha venom but more importantly placed him before the Elders Council and the Medical Council for invention and use of a dangerous kinjutsu. Only the interference of his newly entitled sensei, the Yondaime Hokage and the Sandaime kept him safe and the matter was sealed and removed from the village's records (not the Uchiha's though). Despite this, Rin sat the medical boards once peace was declared early in his sensei's short tenure, and qualified as a doctor for the village hospital where he also worked during the first peace he ever knew, which the Yondaime and Sandaime managed to negotiate for the village. He was promoted to Jounin rank in that time. A year and a half later Kyuubi attacked and was sealed; Yondaime died; war broke out again; Kakami joined ANBU; and after a few months of frantic training so did Rin.
He performed well enough in the service, but the nature of it affected him badly. He was removed from active ANBU service when he was nearly eighteen, after failing a last-minute solo-mission and being tortured nearly to death before Asuka retrieved him. After which his relationship with Kakami took a dire turn for the worse, culminating through years of on-again, off-again dealings with each other (during which she cut her reputation as an ANBU legend and he ran long-range jounin missions) to the last night he saw Kakami when he was twenty-three. He was asked to go on an ANBU mission, as his skills were needed and there truly was nobody else available. Rin and his entire team were cut to ribbons by an enemy ambush; he only survived thanks to his medical skills. They were all declared dead.
Rin was taken care of by scientists operating out of a Kirigakure prison for special ability prisoners; once he was fit enough to survive it they began working on him with genjutsu: they were on retainer to get information out of him about Konoha. As that failed things moved from torture to experimentations and by the time Asuka and Kakami infiltrated the prison five years later on an unrelated mission and recovered him it was sheer force of will and the waning interest of his captors that had kept him sane.
Now that he's home, Rin has recovered best he can from all of that and has managed to pull together a quietly impressive life all things considered. He's been reinsated as a jounin of the village, runs field missions, works in the hospital as they have a current staff shortage, is trying to get back to his religious traditions, and is kinda-sorta-actually living with Kakami. ^___^
