Nick's still in his room when Joe gets back from putting Mom to bed, which is even more surprising to Joe than the rest of the night's events. Joe would have guessed that Nick would have taken a car and been long gone by now, even if only to avoid the conversation they're going to have to have now.
Joe stands in the doorway to Nick's bedroom, just watching his brother wring his hands and stare at the floor. He's freaking out, as he should be.
Joe can't think of a way to ease the tension. So, mom gives you handjobs... doesn't really fall from the lips quite as easily as it might seem. But that's... pretty much what he'd walked in on: mom leaned over Nick on his bed, cooing nonsense in his red little ear while she stroked his obvious erection through his shorts. Nick leaning back on the headboard, eyes sleepy and thin, face flushed, one hand covering mom's, guiding her or feeling her or doing something. Something that clearly didn't involve pushing her away.
"It's not what it looks like."
Joe can't help the snorting sound that escapes him. "Really?" he says, eyebrows raised. "Because it looks like Mom was molesting you, and you were digging it."
Nick's eyes flash on him quickly. "She wasn't- she wasn't molesting me, Joe. She was- she was just a little drunk-"
"Oh I know from drunk," Joe cuts off. "I've been drunk. I've seen drunk. But I've never seen anything like that."
Nick pales, stops his pacing and sits down hard on his bed. He puts his face in his hands.
"But maybe I'm just missing the context," Joe says quietly. He's trying not to be meaner than he needs to be, but this is not something he can be okay with.
"It's not like we ever..." Nick starts, but trails off weakly.
"Made out?" Joe supplies.
Nick flushes pink, looks towards the wall. He doesn't say anything for a long moment.
"We've never gone any further than that," Nick finally says, still keeping his eyes averted.
"Bullshit," Joe says easily. It's funny how Nick's head whips up, bullet-fast, at the curse word. Joe smiles. Go ahead, he thinks. Reprimand me for swearing.
"I'm not lying," Nick insists, looking him straight in the face now, defiant.
"Nick," Joe reasons. "I just watched her get to third base with you."
"Over the clothes is second base," Nick grumbles. "And anyways, that's what I meant. We've never gone any further than that."
Joe lets himself stare at Nick for a long, quiet moment, a half-smile still cocked on his lips. Nick fidgets, but keeps his jaw clenched. "So you're saying it's okay because, what? Mom's never given you a hummer?"
"I'm not saying it's okay!" Nick's whole face has gone beet red. "I'm just saying-" He waves his hands in the air stupidly. "I don't know what I'm saying. I just don't want you getting the wrong idea."
Joe leans back against the door frame and laughs. "Because that would be weird," Joe says. "Especially when everything about this situation is so clear cut and normal."
This seems to take the fight right out of Nick. He slumps back against his bed and huffs out a breath. Joe takes pity on him, goes to sit next to him on the bed. They sit together in silence for a few moments. Eventually Nick says, quietly, "It is weird."
"Mm-hmm," Joe agrees, although he's not sure which part is weirder: that his mom has been drunkenly hitting on his brother or that his brother has been enjoying it. Sober. He'd wondered why Nick had bought his own place but never fully moved out of his parents' home, and now he has to wonder how much mom's wine-and-handjob indulgence had to do with it.
Nick looks pained - like being caught was the bad part, and now he's got to deal with the burden of this screwed up situation all by himself. Joe reaches over, cuffs a hand around the back of Nick's neck, pulls him close. "It's okay," he says, even though he doesn't really believe that. "There was bound to be something weird about you at some point."
Nick grunts in protest but snuggles against Joe's shoulder just the same.
"Don't worry," Nick murmurs. "I've got it under control. I'll get it under control."

The next morning, Joe comes downstairs for breakfast and walks into the kitchen just in time to see mom giving Nick a kiss good morning. She's fixing him some eggs, and for a minute, Joe completely forgets the whole weirdness of the previous night. Mom has either completely forgotten or she's really experienced at pretending to just be a great mom with no untoward urges towards her son, and Nick- well Nick looks vaguely pinched and uncomfortable, but that's pretty much how Nick always looks.
So Joe tries to pay more attention to the little things. The way mom touches Nick, scritches at his curls when she pours him his OJ. The way Nick almost unconsciously leans back into it, smiling up at her lazily. The way pretty much one hundred percent of the conversation is about how wonderful Nick is, and how proud mom is of him, of how he's growing up so well.
At one point, when mom brings over the sports section of the paper for Nick, she squeezes his shoulder and says, "Oh honey, you're feeling tight. I'll help you rub that out later."
Joe chokes on his coffee. Nick shoots him a warning glare and says, "Ah, thanks ma. I'll get Sid to take a look at it." His cheeks are bright, splotchy red, and Joe can't tell if that's from embarrassment or arousal.
"Don't you dare," mom tsks. "Your old mom wants to take care of you, okay? It's not often that I get to baby you anymore," she sighs wistfully.
Nick stares down at his eggs and looks sick.
"You know," Joe says loudly. "My neck is killing me, now that you mention it."
"Aw, sweetheart," mom coos, "let me help you." She rubs at his neck and shoulders and mmm, it feels good, but not, like, good or anything, so Joe doesn't think much of it.
When she's done, Joe looks up at her and says, "Thank you, mommy," and tips his face up when she goes in to give him a kiss on the head. They end up kissing on the mouth, and Joe lets his lips linger longer than he would normally. Her mouth is soft and warm, and yeah, if he thinks about it, it feels like kissing a regular girl, only more familiar. He can see how maybe Nick got things confused and started associating those kisses and touches with something sexual. Mom pulls back slowly, smiles at him fondly.
"I still want to baby you, too," she sighs, ruffling his hair.
When he looks over at Nick, Nick is glaring at him, furious. Joe raises his eyebrows in question, but Nick just tightens his jaw and stabs at his breakfast. Joe's mouth falls open in surprise, because Nick looks- Nick looks jealous.
Joe is speechless. This is worse than he'd thought.

Later, when Nick passes by him as Joe is walking out to the pool, Joe can't help himself. He needs to know how deep this issue goes. He stops Nick with a hand to the chest and says, "Hey, is mom out there? Is she wearing her red bikini? Because- augh!"
Nick punches him hard in the chest, sending Joe reeling back into the wall. "Don't talk like that about her," Nick hisses angrily.
"Like what?" Joe squeaks, incredulous. "I just asked if she was outside and-"
"Don't," Nick warns, "say anything about her in her bathing suit." He presses Joe harder into the wall.
It kind of hurts to breathe, but Joe manages to croak out, "Why? Would that be inappropriate?" just in time for Nick to shove him again. Even though he didn't even say anything inappropriate.
"Ow!" Joe yelps, glaring at Nick. He shoves his pointer finger right at the middle of Nick's chest, a move he knows Nick hates. "Two wrongs don't make a right, you know," he hisses. "And I'm not the one who's being inappropriate here, okay? You're out of control, dude. I'm just trying to help."
"Just- Stay out of it," Nick growls, and stomps away, leaving Joe pissed off and wheezing against the wall.
And if Joe Jonas knows anything, anything at all, it's that he is absolutely, positively NOT going to stay out of it.

Joe's relieved when he pops home later in the week and finds Mom alone. And sober.
She's still sweet and affectionate with him, and Joe counts how many times she brings up Nick in conversation - it's not anything out of the ordinary. Like, she talks about Nick, sure, but mainly in the context of motherly concern. She wants Joe to watch out for Nick, make sure he's following the right path now that he's starting to spread his own wings. Joe nods along enthusiastically, and almost forgets that the biggest threat to Nick's well-being these days is their own mother for a moment, what with the way she's so clearly affectionate and well-intentioned.
It's- she's really easy to talk to is the thing, and soon enough two hours have passed and Joe finds himself stretched out on the sectional couch in the living room with his head in Mom's lap, telling her all about the first warning signs he should have seen when Demi cracked. Mom's humming along, stroking his hair and empathizing with him at each unexpected memory, when out of nowhere they hear a quiet, pissy, "Oh."
"Hi baby," mom says with a smile, but Nick is not smiling back. He's standing in the doorway, holding a bag of groceries and a second, black plastic bag, and he looks, well, thwarted.
"Hi baby," Joe echoes, grinning at his brother.
Nick doesn't smile back. "What are you doing here?"
Joe snuggles down into the sofa cushions further, tucking his hands under mom's thighs. "Just visiting our beautiful mother," Joe says airily. "Couldn't think of another girl I'd rather be with." He winks at mom and she blushes, shushing him like he's embarrassing her. He cranes his neck to peer at Nick. "What are you doing here?"
Nick's cheeks go a little pink as he says, "I picked up some groceries," to mom.
Joe pops up off the couch. "Great idea! I'll help you put them away, and we can fix dinner for Mom-"
"-uh, actually-" Nick stammers
"Oh that would be lovely," Mom gushes. "Date night with my handsome boys."
"Yeah Nick," Joe says as he grabs the bags out of Nick's hands, waggling his eyebrows suggestively. "Date night."
Nick pinches him hard right in the gut but Joe just laughs and drags his sullen brother into the kitchen.
"Now let's see what you've brought us," Joe says, shuffling through the bags. "Oh! Look at this! Cabernet Sauvignon!" He exaggerates each syllable until Nick flinches. "But don't you need to be twenty-one to purchase this?"
"Why are you here, Joseph?" Nick's jaw is clenched and he looks really unhappy.
"Can't I just drop in and visit sometimes? She's my mom, too, you know." Joe nudges Nick with his shoulder, trying to diffuse the situation somewhat, but really, Nick is being ridiculous. "Why are you so mad?" Joe asks earnestly. Because if Nick doesn't have anything to hide, he shouldn't be acting like Joe just stole his favorite toy.
Nick gives him a hard look, eyes flashing. "It feels like you're checking up on us."
Joe raises his eyebrows in surprise. Nick stammers a little. "Checking up on ME. There isn't- there is no 'us'."
"Of course there isn't," Joe says slowly. "Because that would be-?" He trails off, waiting for Nick to fill in the blank. Nick just stares at him, looking confused and annoyed. "Because that would be fucked up, Nicholas."
Nick looks away. Joe sighs and grabs him by the shoulders, turning him so that they're facing each other.
"I love you, okay? And I will always love you. But you-" he points at Nick, "-are fucked up."
Nick scowls. "I'm not-"
"I don't know what's going on inside there," he says, poking Nick in the head. "But I can't help noticing that you came over tonight with three bottles of wine and a bag full of chocolates and berries. To hang out with our mom, who you presumably thought was alone-" He waits for Nick to stop him, but Nick, amazingly, is silent. "-and who you thought you could, what, make out with?"
Nick's mouth falls open, but before he can say anything Mom calls out, "I'm going to take a shower before dinner, okay?"
Joe curls his fingers in Nick's shirt, like he needs to make sure Nick isn't going to run upstairs and jump in the shower too. "Take your time, mommy," Joe yells back. "I'll take care of Nick."

Nick's on his second glass of wine, sipping it sullenly while Joe chops vegetables for a salad and talks at him about how he shouldn't be lusting after their mother.
"It's not normal-" Joe is saying, and then Nick puts down his glass with a loud clink and says, "But we're not normal!"
Joe stops chopping and looks up at him, confused.
"We're not, and not just because of the whole-" Nick waves his hands around in the air non-specifically, "rock star whatever. We aren't like other people, Joe. We can't trust other people, not like we can trust each other. You know?"
Nick looks up at Joe piteously, and for a fleeting moment, Joe thinks he understands. They do have to be so careful with most people, and it's true, there aren't a whole lot of people outside of family that they can trust - everyone's looking to leak something to TMZ or Perez Hilton these days. And it's not like they even do anything bad - for some reason even the most mundane things make it into the headlines. It's easy to get paranoid.
Add to that 'whole rock star whatever' the further complications that their faith brings to the table - they may not still be virgins but at this point, it's pretty much impossible to separate sex from love, from the sense that intimacy comes with trust and deep feeling.
It hits Joe hard as he watches Nick splash some more red wine into his glass. Maybe Nick can't get off with anyone else. Maybe- maybe that's why Mom does it for him. She- of course. She would do anything for them.
Nick's mouth is stained deep red with the wine and he looks bleary and flushed. He looks at Joe like he's begging for something and- Oh god. Joe would do anything for him, too.
"I told you I was going to help you with this," Joe says, voice suddenly hoarse. He grabs the glass of wine out of Nick's hand, slams it back in one gulp. "I can help you with this."
Nick blinks at him slowly, watches Joe lick his lips but says nothing. Joe wipes his hands on the apron he's wearing and comes around to where Nick's sitting, pushes himself in between Nick's legs. He tries not to feel self-conscious as he reaches up, slides one hand into Nick's curls, holds him tight.
Nick's mouth forms a silent 'o' and his eyes flutter closed, cheeks pinking even further.
"N-nick," Joe says, mouth tripping over the word. One of Nick's hands scrabble up Joe's chest, grabbing at the apron strap and clutching it desperately. "God, do you want-?"
He doesn't even get the question out before Nick is nodding, eyes blinking open, pupils blown. "Please," Nick whispers, pulling Joe impossibly closer.
Joe can't help it, he can't. He leans down and licks at Nick's mouth, just a tentative, soft little taste and it's-
"So sweet," he murmurs, nuzzling against Nick's hot cheek. He can hear Nick breathing through his mouth, feel Nick tugging him in again, and Jesus, Joe wants to kiss Nick, for real. He feels like he's on fire, like he's drawn in now and this must be what mom felt like, because Nick is beautiful and pitiful and his. "God, and you're my brother-"
Nick surges up and kisses him, mouth all plush and warm and delicious. He tastes like wine and like spit and it's so unexpectedly hot, to have his control freak of a little brother kissing him so frantically, like he's afraid Joe's going to push him away. And that's- Joe doesn't want Nick to feel like that. He's in this thing with Nick, too.
He pulls back slightly, gently tugging on Nick's hair when Nick chases his mouth. "You're my brother," Joe says again, and tries to make sure Nick gets the emphasis. "Mine."
Nick whimpers and drags Joe's hand down to the hard poke of his dick. "I love you," he says, and yeah, Joe knows exactly how he feels.
Joe stands in the doorway to Nick's bedroom, just watching his brother wring his hands and stare at the floor. He's freaking out, as he should be.
