Review of Hot Fuzz

So, once again, I watched another movie (thank you, god, for days off;)) and here is my verdict!

As a huge (and I mean huge) fan of "Shaun of the Dead", I couldn't wait to see the latest and greatest from the comedic geniuses behind SotD. From the enthusiastic recommendations at work, to the hilarious previews, and my own "Shaun of the Dead" nostalgia (zombies and humor, oh how I miss thee), my expectations were sky-high. After viewing "Hot Fuzz", they certainly weren't cruelly dashed, but they were gently returned back to reality.

The story is this: the main character, an English policeman, is prodigiously talented, to such a degree that his co-workers are both jealous and intimidated. So, it's off to the countryside with our hapless hero. Lucky for him, underneath the tranquil and idyllic surface, there's plenty of mayhem and mystery.

The storyline is captivating right from the beginning. Slow-paced and challenging as most two and half hour movies are, the writers and director did a great job of keeping the plot and action jam-packed, fast-paced, and interesting. The movie has so many little elements-visual cues and jokes, plays-on-words with English syntax, inside jokes and references, your brain is constantly trying to keep up with your eyes. Sweet joy..the action and plot are right on par with "Shawn of the Dead"'s.

Not only is there action aplenty, there are more talented actors than you can possibly name. Hamming up their lines for all they are worth, these actors make even the most corny puns forgive-able. Oh, and as for Simon Pegg (who plays the main character)-I hope this movie gives him the further recognition he deserves.

So why did the movie not quite succeed my expectations? The humor, which is the best and worst thing about this movie. Overall, the movie is hysterical, but in the first half, the jokes are more consistently funny. In the second half, they become hit and miss. Since the director likes to use many of the same type of jokes repeatedly, their appeal wears as the movie contiues.

Still, this movie is not bad or even mediocre. It just isn't quite as fantastic as "Shaun of the Dead". However, the acting, directing, and plot keep it wildly entertaining and highly recommended. More than worth a watch (or two, or three!)

Overall: 4 and a half out of 5 stars
