I believe I made one post before this regarding a new (well, new to me) poetry technique called "erasure" or "cross out" poems. I took a copy of The Egoist by George Meredith that I had to read for one of my university courses (not my favourite book, five minutes worth of plot drawn out into 425 pages, but there are some good words and phrases in there). The technique is basically to highlight or cross out words to form poems. Here are a few I have done recently. I've been working on them more now that the television has been packed up because we're moving!
This poem was inspired by the footnote on the page, which says: "The sentinel at Pompeii maintained his post when Vesuvius erupted, and was found there many centuries later"
This is really too bad
to wait here, you should not have done it
sentinel at Pompeii
under orders to stay
Oh! run, run
and you would not move through all that!
I am sorry; so sorry!
you shall make me remember you
a faithful soldier at his post
This one came out a bit religious:
Am I alone?
is it wrong to pray I am restored?
I'll believe in heaven
without suspicion of a trap
sweet divine glimpse
that tempts the eye upward
This one is a commentary on a particular novel that is popular right now, but I won't say which one ;)
Shuddering visions
see he is sparkling in person
probably illiterate, if I may judge
I ask more
it is expected to satisfy in the modern world
let us wash our hands of it
laugh at it
and restore language above foolish reading
Alright, one more!
The art of the sky
sweet-lighted vividly
pretty, if not beautiful
trimmed with deep rose
traced with hues of red
and billowy white ballooning clouds
firm in color like the heavens
I'll post some more later, maybe tomorrow? Depends how much time I have. We've been really busy cleaning the house. Only two weeks until we move!
cross out poems,
poetry,
poems,
erasure poems
