Burn With Me

Considering the rumour about how good it was and the fact it appeared to be a rip off of Sunshine (my favourite movie of the year so far), I had really high hopes for this. As a result, I was a little disappointed. Yeah, it was good, but I was expecting Girl in the Fireplace type good, which it was not. It was very much like the third act of Sunshine and while I know I really shouldn’t compare the two, there’s so much in common that I can’t help myself and really 42 pales in comparison.

I love good old running down corridors and bases under siege episode. I think I say that every time there’s an episode with those factors in it. I don’t think the 42 minutes gimmick did it any good. Something about this episode felt incomplete. Maybe it should have been 40 minutes with some more set up of the characters. I really liked the idea of Michelle Colin’s character throwing herself out of the airlock with her husband in her arms, but it would have worked so better if we had some set up of their relationship before he got turned into a sun-monster. I need a reason to care. Also, some of the dialogue was clunky. Saying that, it had some great moments.

You go Martha! That kiss made the episode entirely worth it. I hope this means she’s over her crush on the Doctor. Because I like the idea of a Four-Sarah type Doctor-Companion relationship, two best mates travelling around time and space. Except Martha gets flirt with people she meets along the way.

Having the star as an organism, that was kind of cool. Having the Doctor say “I’m scared” I’m not so sure about. I’m all for the Doctor getting scared every now and again, but saying it, er no. He should never say it. He's the Doctor. It’s just one of those things. Basically that whole scene with the stasis machine I wish wasn’t in the episode.

Goodness that space suit made DT look skinny. Loved his costume this episode, the purplish shirt with the blue suit is a really good luck. And for the first time I noticed he was wearing a T-shirt underneath it all.

The telephone conversations I sort of loved, sort of despised, mainly because they are nearly exactly like the ones I have with my mother. Though as far as I know, my mother isn’t in cahoots with an evil politician. I do love how this show portrays family relationships, Martha's mum is annoying, but acts in a very believable way towards her children. It was also a good way to get the Saxon plot without having to spend too much time on present day earth, however I don’t think the Doctor really though through making Martha’s cell phone work, if she’s on it half as much as she was in Smith and Jones she’d not going to be much fun to travel with anymore.

What was interesting was that her mother didn’t seem to be too happy about cooperating with Saxon’s people. She’s changed her tune since the end of TLE, makes me think something has happened in between to make her stop trusting Saxon, but is being forced too. Maybe it’s the lesser of two evils for her, and the Doctor in her opinion is the greater.

The music was good this episode, particularly good of them to have none playing when the capsule drifts off into space. Some dramatic music there would really have been overkill. Though, I think it says something for the usual background music of the show that I really noticed the silence.

Anyway, not brilliant, but good entertainment, great furtherance of the Saxon plot and that kiss was awesome and needed.
