So THERE WAS NEW THICK OF IT! (It's been three years! Three years! I shall be capslocking for a while yet over this). The production crew are pretty damn brave for having the show's three biggest characters sit out the first episode (in three years!), but if I can waiting three years for a new episode, I can wait another week for the fantastic amazingness that is the Malcolm Tucker and Nicola Murray political odd couple.
Anyway, I laughed out loud a lot at the episode, and I did love it, but I don't know...something felt slightly off. It could well be the lack the big three, but it felt more like they were trying over hard to be funny. It's like the writers have been eager to write the coalition for so long that they just took off a bit too fast. It's not like it wasn't funny - it was hilarious - it's just the timing of all the jokes felt a bit weird, like it was off the beat.
Peter, Phil, Emma, Stewart, Terri and the guy that used to be the Daily Mail's night editor (and whom I'm glad to see again), were all hilarious, as was Peter's only mentioned wife (seems he has a slightly less dysfunctional marriage than Nicola even with his cheating and love child). Poor Glenn by his very presence was cringe worthy, and made me feel bad rather than laugh out loud. Not sure about the new Minister. There was something in the actors line delivery that made if feel like he was delivering lines, which is just such a big no.
So big dilemma that has arrived: the word 'digitard.' I find it really funny and creative want to be able to use it, but is it to close to the word 'retard' to be usable given that I find 'retard' really offensive and would never use it and think less of people who do. Probably the fact I'm having a dilemma about using it is pretty much means I shouldn't.
Also LESTRADE IN A SPACESHIP.
Except there was not enough Rupert Graves and I didn't like his character because umm...misogynist hunter - big no. So in terms of Lestrade on a Spaceship, the episode was a bit of a disappointment, and really, if they'd put Lestrade on the spaceship rather than Rupert Graves playing a character I don't like on a spaceship, I'd have been happier.
On the other hand, there was dinosaurs, and Amy being awesome and gaining her own companions and dinosaurs, and that was fun.
Okay, I have this really irrational thing and am slightly disappointed they picked Nefertiti. It's just Hatshepsut is so much more awesome and deserves to be better known. Nefertiti was a queen, yes, who quite possibly ruled after her husbands death, but we're not sure, Hatshepsut was a freaking Pharaoh, and she did rule for twenty mostly peaceful years and during her reign oversaw exploration into Africa and some amazing architecture (she was quite possibly having an affair with her chief architect), and she wore a fake beard, so there's kind of the cross dressing thing she had going on which I like about her. Plus, I have this association of Neferititi with really tacky souvenirs, and completely irrationally, I hold this against her.
And there was WALDER FREY. I feel a bit bad for David Bradley because he has these villain roles handed to him their not likeable villains and they're not villains you love to hate, they're villains that disgust you to your core and just having to see them on screen makes you feel horrible and you pretty much spend your time hoping that they get killed dead in a befittingly awful way. He got killed dead, and while I'm usually against the Doctor killing people, I'm making an exception in this case.
Also, there was Rory's father. Which I think was intended to be more emotionally affecting than it actually was, but it wasn't bad, and I do love seeing Rory's awesome nursing skills.
Anyway, verdict on the episode is that it wasn't aweome like it should have been, but it was pretty enjoyable.
Finally, I've been watching Silk recently, and having the reaction that it is only natural that anyone watching Silk should have which is thinking that Maxine Peake is fantastic and should be in absolutely everything and way more famous and that I would watch the Maxine Peake as Martha Costello sits down at a desk and silently reads the newspaper show. Then it struck me, my dream casting for the Twelth Doctor. So: Maxine Peake for Twelve! As soon as Matt Smith announces he's hanging up the bow tie, I will be making badges.
