Books, Films, Telly - All the Important Stuff

I've been really bad at posting lately. I have been watching stuff though...

1. My flatmate's bf has just started on book two of A Storm of Swords and my flatmate has been hovering over him ever since just waiting for him to get to that chapter, which is hilarious given that when my flatmate started on that book I was hovering over her waiting for her to read that chapter and had her under strict instructions that even though I would not tell her a thing about it in advance, she would recognise it when she read it and once she did to inform me the moment she had done. Sure enough, I got a text message the instant she had finished it. I'm starting to wonder if reading the books is only half the fun of the ASOIAF series, the other half is getting a friend hooked then watching and waiting.

2. I watched In Time yesterday, which I've been looking forward to for a while, given that it's got a. Cillian Murphy in it, and b. it's an sci-fi pick from Andrew Nichol and I love Gattaca and The Truman Show. Sadly, it's not as great as either of those two movies, but it is a good movie, I certainly enjoyed it's pretty scathing criticism of run-away capitalism (although it could have felt could have been a bit less heavy handed). While the two leads are okay, however (somewhat predictably because it is Cillian Murphy) Cillian Murphy as the super-sexy, un-corruptible time cop chasing them is easily the best thing in the movie.

3. I also watched the pilot of Once Upon A Time, which I didn't think of too highly while I was watching it, but as soon as it finished I wanted to know what's going to happen, so the plot at least has me hooked and so I'll continue to watch it for the near future. And it'll be good to have another show in my life in which I can play 'spot the Vancouver actor' (is it bad that I can tell if a television show or movie is filmed in Canada based on the supporting actors?). I am slightly worried that it will disappoint me though, I'm one episode in and already the Evil Queen is my favourite character, and I so desperately want her to be morally ambiguous rather than evil and turn out to not be the big bad, but with the good vs evil set up, I'm not sure if that's going to happen.

4. Speaking of Canadian shows, OMG Sanctuary! I just want to hug the show and cheer. I'm aware that at a few conventions Amanda Tapping had said that Magnus was bi and she was open to having a female love interest, but not in a million years did I think the show would have the courage to go there, and also wonderfully, make it an every day sort of thing and not a big deal or a cynical ratings ploy. Oh, show, you are wonderful! As for the rest of the episode, the B-plot was forgettable, but the gender-swapped Die Hard 2 A-plot was a tonne of fun. Magnus kicking ass never gets old.

5. The other show I want to hug is Community, as the multiple realities episode was one of the funniest things I have ever watched, and the Halloween episode was also pretty brilliant. I can't decide which random characters I'd like to revisit more, Evil!Troy and Evil!Abed and their attempts to break though realities, or Rational!Abed and Rational!Britta and how they earn their eventual horror movie fate. With all the focus of the important on the role of each individual in the group and also with the deeper look into their various thought patterns, I think if we've learnt anything from the past three episodes, its that the study group needs to exist as it acts as a quarantine, protecting the rest humanity from that seven. Also, Britta's always been my favourite, but Gillian Jacobs has really started to steal the show this season.
