There's an absolutely wonderful picspam
here with comparisons between Game of Thrones/ASOIAF characters and historical figures from the War of the Roses and the Tudor period. Can I just say, that I really hope Sansa is meant to be Elizabeth I.
Also,
this secret (spoilers) at ASOIAF confessions, I agree with so much.
Cos what I really want to happen is for Stoneheart to declare herself Queen of the Crippled, the Broken and the Dead, and take the throne with Nymeria's army of the wolves, then proceed to take her revenge without mercy and be the worst ruler yet. And then for Sansa to find a way to put a stop to her mother, take the throne for herself and be all, “I've had it up to here with marriage alliances, you're getting a virgin Queen, bitches” and be the best Queen ever.
Actually, my dream scene for ASOIAF would be a triumphant and battle-drunk Dany barging her way into the throne room having just ended the threat of the Others and arrived in King's Landing on Drogon, fully intent to kill/remove whatever userper is on the throne and take what she believes is her right, to find a upset-but-steady Sansa on the throne, surrounded by dead bodies and defended only by her fierce little sister holding a thin sword, and a direwolf, and for Dany confronted with two girls even younger and having lived even more harrowing lives than she has to just realise what a foolish quest it's all been, laugh hysterically and go back to the Dothraki Sea where she's happy and leave Sansa the throne.
And moving on from ASOIAF, I've just finished watching the first season of The Wire, which, given that it's often lauded as the best television series ever, I've been meaning to watch for some time (although, really, people often making comparisons between it and Game of Thrones got me to give it a watch in the end). And it really is brilliant.
For those not familiar, it's a show (or the first season at is a least) about a police investigation into what any procedural show would find too dull to have an episode about (a drug gang in Baltimore), which leaves in all the bits any procedural would find to dull to leave in (following the paperwork, listening to wiretaps, budget issues and internal police politics) and it is completely and utterly riveting. And it is so on the strength of the writing, on the characters and the performances, and on its fascinating look at the social issues prevalent that have created the situation.
The Game of Thrones comparisons are quite apt, there's a lot of morally ambiguous flawed characters that you come to love, a very intricate plot and a 'the game' is often referred to by characters. And like all shows that I find really brilliant, I just adore the characters, and often find myself adoring characters I would have initially though I would have liked (and I may be just a little bit in love with Daniels. I'm now going to have to watch Fringe ).
I'm not willing to label it the best television show ever just yet, but I will say its the best show about police work that I have ever seen and it that it is seriously fantastic.
