Turns out I haven't posted in ages. RL life has been a bit crap, so I've been a bit blah lately.
Anyway...How fantastic has Being Human become? After the disappointing second series I was hoping the third series would recapture everything I loved about the first series, but instead it has surpassed its previous high point, and seems to be getting better and better with each episode.
And the latest episode is such a brilliant morality play, with nearly every character crossing a line what with Mitchell, Annie and George all at one point or another agreeing to kill Herrick, and Nina threatening to destroy the social worker's career (not really as bad, but the social worker's considerably more sympathetic than Herrick) all the while Herrick consciously/subconsciously starts to play them all (I can't decide whether he's faking it or not).
And finally, the seasons plot threads are starting to come together, with Nina being drawn to the centre of Mitchell's Greek tragedy. Still, obviously it's going to be George. I'm starting to think it's so obviously George that the show will pull a double switch and actually make it Nina who kills Mitchell (I have no doubt Mitchell is going to die, as Adrian Turner's in New Zealand filming the Hobbit and will be for some while).
And then there's Nina, whom I adore and seem to adore more with every episode. She's got those wonderful Donna Noble-esq qualities of being compassionate and yet formidable, and a strong enough moral compass to see through a lot of the other characters' crap and draw a line. Plus, she kicks ass as a nurse and its wonderful how her job has become so integral to the show. Sadly, I have a feeling Nina is on the verge of becoming one of the most hated female characters on the internet, if she hasn't already, for her actions at the end of the latest episode. Grrrr.
Other than that I've been watching Downton Abbey and Skins. Downton Abbey is so wonderful that I can't even start, and I cannot wait for the second series (happen already, please).
Meanwhile the third generation of Skins isn't quite the first (well, no generation will ever be quite as good as the first IMHO), but they're still a likeable bunch of characters and the show is doing a great job of presenting some outwardly normal characters and then giving them such rich and complicated lives. It has been somewhat not at all shocking this season though. The most shocking thing for me is in one of his scenes, Chris Addison for a brief moment actually looked his age.
In other things, I saw Black Swan would not mind at all if it took the Oscar home. It's completely riveting and Natalie Portman is amazing. Plus the camera work. They must have included the camera person in planning the choreography, that's the only thing I can think of as to how the camera manages to get so into the dance and so close to the dancers. It really sets the bar for future dance movies.
And, like nearly everyone else, I'm incredibly excited about the new X-Men movie. Between that and Captain America, I think the new thing is period super-heroics. As a big fan of period dramas and superheroes and as a person who is already a fan of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, 1602 and Sanctuary, I say bring on!
