Tonks vs. Superman

Jun 27, 2006 12:12

In response to the endless amounts of crap that get trown at the female HP characters and Tonks in particular, it's time for the clash of the people who lose their powers for love, Nymphadora Tonks in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince vs. Clark Kent/Superman from Superman II, to see who is the worst role model.

1. Circumstances of Loss

Tonks is a woman stuck in the front line, fighting a war and defending a town from Dementors, dark creatures that suck every once of happiness out of a person. Her cousin has recently died, killed by her Aunt who Tonks failed to capture and was injured in the process. There are hints she is not getting along with her parents. Then the man she loves leaves her to go gallivanting around the country with Fenrir Greyback, a ruthless savage of a werewolf, and he neglects to talk to her. It’s involuntary.

Superman has been in love with Lois Lane since he met her. Finally she had discovered his identity and on their first date, at his fortress of solitude, his mother tells him he must give up his powers to be with a mortal. So, without checking the news to see if a bunch of aliens have taken the White House, or even consulting Lois, or even thinking about the amount of people he will not be able to save anymore, he gives up his powers voluntarily.

Conclusion - Superman is a lovesick idiot who can’t stand up to his dead mother. Tonks is having a really shit year.

2. Consequences

Tonks using he own wits manages to find Harry underneath an invisibility cloak in an abandoned train and then performs a Patronus, which is advanced magic. Later, she takes part in the fight at Hogwarts and successfully manages to duel with a Death Eater without having taken a Luck Potion like children characters did.

Clark Kent gets beaten up by a Truckee and whines because he doesn’t like seeing his own blood.

Conclusion - Superman isn’t much without his powers. Tonks still functions incredibly well.

3. How They Got Their Grove Back.

Tonks put up with Remus' crap for a year before finally losing it. There is reconciliation. Finally with one thing going right in her life, she gets her powers back.

Superman lasts a couple of days before heading straight back to the fortress and trying to get his powers back. We don’t see how, but I would imagine begging is involved. He has to break up with Lois.

Conclusion - Superman has to choose one or the other. Tonks has it all.

Worst Role Model - Superman. Superman is a lovesick puppy who makes a bad decision without much thought and cannot live with it. Tonks is getting crap from circumstances beyond her control but manages to go on and be an effective Auror reguardless.

The big question is why is Tonks getting slagged off as being a bad role model while Superman is not. Because she is a female and females cannot show any weakness or flaws, for if they do they are not an good gender role model. However Superman is a male, and somewhere along the line society has accepted that men can have failings and flaws and still be a hero.
