Without noticing, he sets it down on the couch and turns to his Winter's Veil decorations - which are all softly lit strands of garland. How they're lit - it's not quite clear - until Meryl crouches down next to his Christmas plant, takes a small coin on a string, and lets it light up in his hands.
It's magic.
