Whatever it is, it's glowing gently in his hands, with white-blue light; after the light fades it's revealed to be a small hand-mirror. The surface still swirls with magic, not reflecting Meryl's face but instead something vague and misty. Apparently this is what he wants it to do

Not the future as much as things that are happening very far away. Or, occasionally, things in the past - but that requires a more magically inclined sanctum. Divination into the future does as well. Still, it's useful for checking up on people...finding lost children....
