"Community & Family Medicine" projects. Please, I have enough to learn about diagnosing and treating diseases and sifting through patient stories without having to worry about filing out a super detailed family history of a random patient, making a 40 slide powerpoint presentation on community resources and disease patterns (yeah, there are a lot of obese hypertensive diabetics. I could figure that out from clinic), and research papers on health IT. And of course, in true Med School form none of this is remotely relevant to an actual practice. The irony is that I actually really like clinic itself, but if this is what organized/academic Family Medicine thinks is important it's only going to drive more students away from a specialty that already doesn't get much love 'round these parts. The only project I should have to worry about is figuring out how to not bomb the shelf on Friday.
Disclaimer: I think this is largely an issue with my particular school, whose Department of Community and Family Medicine seems to think it's leading the next big thing, while leading me towards taking a closer look at Med/Peds.
