Hello everyone,

I just found this nice community, and I think it would be appropriate to ask something I've had in mind for a while. If it's not, then I might as well apologize ahead of time.

I am 18 years old (if that has any significance)  from Azerbaijan, and our medical program is fairly different from most of the world. I just completed my first year. Although I feel like I have already forgotten most things. What I want to ask is, what subjects do you study in your first year of medical school? I had these subjects: Anatomy (osteology, myology, internal organs and central nervous system so far), Biology (cytology, genetics, parasitology, comparative anatomy, and a little embryology), history, medical history, Latin (but our teacher didn't like to teach anything so that he could ask for money when we had our exams, that's why I don't know Latin other than the anatomical terms), Physical Education, Biophysical and Bio-organic chemistry (one semester), physics (one semester), histology (cytology, embryology, and the tissues so far), informatics, Russian (all year long), and German (all year long). The only things I can count on is anatomy, histology and a little biology. Physics was for instance hard because we were suppose to read from a Russian book, and I didn't, and still don't know Russian.
So far we only had our physics, chemistry, biology and Latin exams. Our Anatomy, Histology, Russian and German exams are next semester. But our medical school is poorly equipped if any, and I feel like I haven't really learned anything at all. I wanted to to a summer project in 2011 so that maybe I can have a chance to learn in a real medical environment. Plus in Azerbaijan education is corrupted, so I'm always worried that I will come across a teacher who want to teach (I sort of have to learn myself). If I want to apply for a summer medical program then I guess I have to know somethings about working in a laboratory. And I don't. If you guys can tell me what you learn, or what you have to know after you have completed your first year of medical school, it would be very helpful. I could try to work on those areas more, and I could even find a lot of things off the internet. Like I found some of the histological slides from the internet. I can find somethings, but seeing things for real is better.
Oh, and I am already learning German and Russian, I know English and my own native language (not that it's spoken much). By next summer I think I'll be able to know enough Russian and German, so I'm hoping language won't be a big problem if I do get a chance.
So if anyone who has a lot of time and desire, could you please tell me what you subjects you had?
Thank you very much for your effort. I really appreciate it.
