Poem of the day

Prayer for Strength

Not to be rid of the task,
But the strength to perform it,
Not a weak fortress, I ask,
But the courage to storm it!
Not the soft pillows of ease
And the safe ways and sure,
But the outcome that no one foresees
And the will to endure.

Not to be rid of all doubt
But to face it unshaken.
To be able to stick the fight out
Till the goal shall be taken.
To know the tense moments of care
And be worn and aghast,
And then rise from the depths of despair,
Successful at last!

Not to be rid of the strain
And the heart-sickening minute,
But the strength and the pluck to remain
In the fight, till I win it!
Not to be safe and secure,
But full strength for the task
And the courage all things to endure.
It is these I ask.
